Lehigh falls to Saint Francis (Pa.), 4-2

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Down 2-0, the Lehigh field hockey team nearly mounted a comeback, but couldn't net the equalizer as Saint Francis hung on for a 4-2 win on Sunday. The Mountain Hawks got goals from senior Kim Eng and freshman Alex Beatson (her first-career goal), but it wasn't enough. Lehigh returns to action on Friday when it travels to Fairfield to face the Stags.
Five of the game's six combined goals were scored in the first half. Saint Francis got on the board 11:37 into the game when Kellie Mason corralled a ball in front of freshman goalkeeper Sophie Fitzpatrick, who was seeing her first collegiate action. Mason converted to make it 1-0.
The Red Flash made it 2-0 less than five minutes later when Carissa Makea's direct shot found the back of the cage off a penalty corner.
The Mountain Hawks answered just 45 seconds later when sophomore Lindsay Metzger carried into the circle and found Eng, who blasted a low shot past Saint Francis goalkeeper Katelyn Vitali to pull within 2-1 at 17:12.
Saint Francis' Selena Adamshick answered, making it 3-1 at the 29:24 mark, but with less than a minute remaining in the first half, Beatson scored her first-career goal, tipping Abby Sprinkel's shot off a penalty corner to make it 3-2 at the half.
Both defenses took over in the second, with few shots and even fewer shots on goal. Vitali made a big save off a Steph Fratoni shot, which led Saint Francis the other way. The Red Flash capitalized less than 20 seconds later when Adamshick scored her second of the game off the transition chance. Lehigh sophomore Sydney Maltinsky-Wilson, who played the second half in goal, came out strong to stop the initial opportunity. But the Mountain Hawks couldn't clear the rebound. That made it 4-2 Saint Francis at the 59:33 mark, which stood as the final.
Final shots were 12-9 in favor of the Red Flash while Lehigh held a 4-3 edge in penalty corners. Fitzpatrick and Maltinsky-Wilson each made two saves for the Mountain Hawks while Vitali finished with six for Saint Francis.
Lehigh will look to bounce back when it travels to Fairfield on Friday. Gametime is set for 4 p.m. The Mountain Hawks will return home next Sunday to host Towson at 12 p.m.
