Mountain Hawks fall at Fairfield, 4-2

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Despite a strong effort down the stretch, the Lehigh field hockey team couldn't come back from a 2-0 deficit, falling to Fairfield, 4-2 on Friday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks got goals from freshman Alex Beatson (her second in as many games) and sophomore Lindsay Metzger along with a career-high 16 saves from sophomore goalie Sydney Maltinsky-Wilson, but it wasn't enough. Lehigh will return home on Sunday to host Towson at 12 p.m.
"I thought we played very hard in the first 10 minutes and the final 10 minutes of today's game," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. "Lindsay [Metzger], Abigail [Bakke], Caitlin [Bryan] and Kim [Eng] all had strong efforts."

After over 18 minutes of scoreless action, which featured five combined saves (four from Fairfield and one from Lehigh), the Stags scored two goals in a 3:38 span to take a 2-0 lead. Both came by reigning America East Player of the Week Felicitas Heinen, at 18:27 off a penalty stroke and 22:05 via a penalty corner.
That score stood until 14:09 into the second half when Beatson scored her second goal in as many games, assisted by junior Marie Mignogna, to pull Lehigh right back into the game. That made it 2-1 at 49:09.
However, Fairfield answered with two goals over the next 10 minutes to essentially put the game out of reach. One came 3:27 after the Mountain Hawks pulled within a goal; the Stags then made it a three-goal advantage at 59:07.
The Mountain Hawks did pull within two at the 64:35 mark via Metzger's second goal of the season, but it wasn't enough.
Lehigh was outshot 30-12 for the game while the Stags also held a 16-9 edge in penalty corners. Maltinsky-Wilson made 16 saves before being relieved by freshman Sophie Fitzpatrick who didn't face a shot. Mignogna also made a pair of defensive saves.
The Mountain Hawks return home for two straight games, beginning on Sunday when they play host to Towson at 12 p.m. Lehigh will then welcome #8 Penn State for a 6 p.m. contest next Friday (Sept. 14).
