BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh senior shortstop Jen Colquhoun has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America first team, it was announced Thursday. The Patriot League Player of the Year, Colquhoun produced one of the finest offensive seasons in school and league history, and was also recognized for her work in the classroom, where she carries a 3.77 grade point average majoring in biochemistry.
The Academic All-America teams are voted on by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
“Being named an Academic All-American is a fitting tribute to Jen, whose senior year was nothing short of stellar in every respect,” said Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan. “Her GPA speaks for itself. And for that matter, her softball statistics perhaps speak even louder. We are very proud of Jen.”
The first Patriot League student-athlete to be named Scholar-Athlete of the Year in three consecutive seasons, Colquhoun earned her third straight Academic All-District honor earlier this month. Colquhoun is a Dean's List student and so far a three-year member of the Patriot League's Academic Honor Roll. She has been named to the first two Academic All-Patriot League softball teams.
On the field, Colquhoun made her senior season the best of her four years in the Brown and White. She became a four-time All-Patriot League selection with her third first-team honor at shortstop. Colquhoun batted .440 on the season, good for second in the Patriot League and tenth nationally. She tied a school single-season record with 13 home runs, and led the Patriot League in runs scored (50), triples (six) and, home runs, while tying for the league lead with 48 RBI.
Colquhoun batted a league best .533 with five home runs and 25 RBI in 18 Patriot League regular season games. She also went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored in Lehigh's recent NCAA Regional appearance in Norman, Okla.
A native of Oak Park, Calif., Colquhoun becomes the fourth Lehigh softball player to receive Academic All-America recognition from CoSIDA, joining Karen Kascinski, who made the third team as a catcher in 1995, Jenny Bender, who was named as the third team designated player in 2003, and Lisa Sweeney, who was a third team pitcher in 2008. Colquhoun is the first player in Lehigh softball history to be named to the first team.
A four-year starter at shortstop, Colquhoun was one of the key cogs for a Lehigh team that won its seventh Patriot League title in nine years in 2012. The Mountain Hawks finished the season at 40-19 advancing to the NCAA Regional in Norman, Okla. Colquhoun played in three NCAA regional tournaments in her four years and was a key member of the 2009 Lehigh team that reached the finals of the Gainesville, Fla. Regional.
