Mountain Hawks drop 1-0 final at red-hot La Salle

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Lehigh women's soccer team fell victim to a red-hot La Salle squad, dropping a 1-0 final to the Explorers on Sunday. The Mountain Hawks (3-4-1) struggled to muster much offense against La Salle (8-0-1), which stands as the only team in the nation who hasn't allowed a goal this season. Lehigh will look to bounce back on Saturday when it opens Patriot League play against archrival Lafayette.
“Our energy level was better and our urgency level was good,” said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. “La Salle is a really good team; I'm not surprised they're undefeated so far and haven't given up a goal. I thought it was a really good game, but we unfortunately weren't able to finish. Overall, we did get some positives out of the way we played.”
A defensive game saw only eight total shots fired in the first 63 minutes before La Salle found the back of the net on its sixth shot of the afternoon. It was Maryam Huseini who beat Lehigh freshman goalkeeper Ashley Blanks from 25 yards out to make it 1-0 at 63:56.
The Mountain Hawks came back just over a minute later when sophomore Murphee Greeley took a shot that sailed wide. Greeley unleashed another chance less than 10 minutes later while freshman Darby Wiegand also had a shot in the game's final moments, but it wasn't enough. La Salle's defense stood tall to pick up its ninth straight shutout to begin the season.
“Both defenses played really well and put pressure and limited the opportunities,” said Lambinus. “Most of the shots were from pretty far out. La Salle's defense played pretty strongly and put pressure on us, but we didn't execute.”
The Explorers led the final shot count, 9-5, while they took the game's only corner kick as well. Greeley and Wiegand each posted a pair of shots while freshman Darby Dustman, making her second-career start, registered Lehigh's lone shot on goal. Blanks finished with one save across La Salle goalkeeper Sanger, who also made one.
The Mountain Hawks return to action next Saturday (Oct. 1) for their Patriot League opener against archrival Lafayette. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
“It's always great to start with your rival,” said Lambinus. “The best part about it is we'll be home and on grass, which is positive for us. We've figured out a lot about our team and I'm confident we can be successful in league play.”
