Mountain Hawks drop wild 6-4 final at Sacred Heart

9/23/2011 11:41:00 PM | Field Hockey

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Despite a pair of goals from junior Kim Eng and the first-career tallies from freshman Natalie Tacka and freshman Brittany Johnson, the Lehigh field hockey team fell victim to two late goals in a tough 6-4 loss at Sacred Heart on Saturday. The Mountain Hawks (1-7) came back from their third deficit of the game with only 3:23 remaining, but the Pioneers responded with markers at 69:10 and 69:43 for the victory.
“We battled back, which was great, but we made too many mistakes in the last three minutes,” said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. “We need to bounce back against a very good Maine team tomorrow.”

After 20 minutes of scoreless action, Sacred Heart lit the lamp first when Hannah Robinson converted a penalty corner at 20:27. Tacka responded less than nine minutes later, taking a nice centering pass from Johnson and one-timing it past Sacred Heart goalkeeper Kim Stow, to even the score at one.

However, the Pioneers responded with a quick score of their own, as Robinson added her second at 33:17 to give Sacred Heart a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.

It didn't take long for the Mountain Hawks to tie the score for a second time as Eng netted her first of the game, just 1:15 into the second half. Junior Kelsey Zeswitz picked up the assist. After a scoreless string, Sacred Heart came back with goals at 53:21 and 57: 55 to make it 4-2, but Lehigh again had an answer.

Eng scored her second of the game and fourth of the season at 59:10 via a penalty stroke, then Johnson took a feed from freshman Lindsay Metzger to even the score at four at 66:37. The assist marked Metzger's first-career point.

As it had all afternoon, Sacred Heart responded with a vengeance, scoring twice in a 33-second span to end any comeback aspirations.

The Pioneers held the final shot edge, 21-10 and in corners, 10-7. Sophomore goalkeeper Sierra Segear made nine saves, allowing four goals in 59:10 before being relieved by freshman Sydney Maltinsky-Wilson. Stow made two stops for Sacred Heart.

Lehigh returns to action in less than 24 hours against No. 14 Maine in a neutral site contest at Quinnipiac University. The game originally scheduled for 1 p.m. has been moved to a 3 p.m. start time.
