BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh incoming freshman goalkeeper Sydney Maltinsky-Wilson is set to compete in the National Futures Championships (NFC) from June 25-30 at USA Field Hockey's National Training Center in Virginia Beach, Va. The crowning event of the annual Futures program, the championships are held each year following the Futures Regional Tournaments.
The National Futures Championships feature 16 Under-19 teams, 16 Under-16 teams and six Under-14 teams with past and future Olympic host cities as team names. New in 2011, all of the NFC teams will be mixed nationally in all age divisions and each team will have players from at least five different regions.
Maltinsky-Wilson will suit up for Team Moscow in the Under-19 division. After a practice day on Saturday (June 25), her squad will begin action on Sunday when it faces Team Montreal at 6 p.m. Moscow will also play Team Grenoble on Monday (11 a.m.) and Sapporo on Tuesday (4 p.m.). The final two days will feature a playoff between the sides.
The National Futures Championship is USA Field Hockey's premier event for Futures Program athletes. The National Futures Championships offer a showcase for more than 600 of the nation's top young female athletes. The talented young athletes in the Futures Program receive five months of elite-level training and tactical instruction in preparation for possible future selection to USA Field Hockey's National Teams. The top athletes from the program's more than 5,000 participants are then selected to compete at the national championships based on performances in their regional programs at the regional tournament.
Maltinsky-Wilson will begin her Lehigh career in the fall following tremendous success at Jamestown High School. The Williamsburg, Va. native owns the school's single-season saves record, garnering Second Team All Bay-Rivers District and Honorable Mention All-Region as a senior.
