BALTIMORE, Md. - Lehigh freshman defenseman and local product Ty Souders has been named to the 122-player tryout pool for the U.S. men's national under-19 team that will travel to Turku, Finland, in 2012 for the Federation of International Lacrosse U19 World Championships. The pool consists of top youngsters from both the high school and collegiate levels.

A native of Macungie, Pa., Souders is the only Patriot League player invited to try out. He is also one of only six student-athletes who played Division I lacrosse in 2011. The others include standouts Shane Sturgis (Penn State), Daniel Eipp (Harvard), Robert Zoppo (Towson), Christopher Piccirilli (Villanova) and Peter DeLuca (Jacksonville).

This year, US Lacrosse received 273 high school and college applicants from 32 states for Team USA tryouts. The tryouts will take place July 7-10, 2011, at University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) in Catonsville, Md.

Team USA Head Coach Tim Flynn (Mountain Lakes High School, N.J.) and assistant coaches Jack Crawford (Loyola Blakefield, Md.), Tom Duquette (Norfolk Academy, Va.) and Tom Rotanz (Shoreham-Wading River High School, N.Y.) will lead the selection of the final 23-man roster, which will be announced July 15.
Souders enjoyed an impressive freshman season for the Mountain Hawks, finishing with 29 groundballs and eight caused turnovers against the opposition's No. 1 or 2 offensive player. The groundball total stood second best among Lehigh defensemen, only four behind All-Patriot League performer Richard Bradley.

Souders helped lead a defense which dominated its opposition in long stretches. The Mountain Hawks held their opponent scoreless for a string of at least 9:54 in each of their final 11 games of the season. In seven of those contests, it stood more than 15 minutes. That included keeping No. 7 nationally ranked Bucknell scoreless for 27:02 in the first half of the Patriot League Semifinals.
