Men’s Freshmen Eight highlights strong first day at Dad Vail Regatta

PHILADELPHIA - The Lehigh rowing team wrapped up an impressive first day at the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta, highlighted by the Men's Freshmen Eight who advanced to the semifinals. The crew will now row in the semifinals at 8:07 a.m. Saturday. The finals are set for 2:13 p.m. and will air locally on 6ABC in Philadelphia and worldwide on ESPN3.com. Also of note was the Women's Freshmen Four, who fell just shy of reaching its semis.
The largest collegiate championship race in the country, over 3,000 student-athletes from more than 100 colleges and universities competed on the first day of the Dad Vail Regatta. That includes a number of nationally-ranked squads from across North America.
The Men's Freshmen Eight finished second with a time of 6:35.28 in the second heat, only behind Drexel at 6:20.64. The crew will now compete in the first heat on Saturday morning (8:07 a.m.), which is immediately followed by heats two and three at 8:13 and 8:19. The top two finishers in each heat advance to the finals. The squad looks to become Lehigh's first-ever Men's Freshmen Eight crew to advance to the finals of the Dad Vail Regatta.

Also impressing for the Mountain Hawks was the Women's Freshmen Four, which fell mere seconds away from qualifying as well. Lehigh came in third in heat five with a time of 8:43.24, less than four seconds behind Jacksonville in second (8:39.85).
Five other boats took to the water, enjoying mixed success. That included the Women's Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight, who both finished fifth. By finishing fifth, the Varsity Eight did qualify for the repechage, but was unable to advance to the semis after placing fourth in that race. The Men's Freshmen Four came in fourth while the Varsity Four and Varsity Eight finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
