HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Lehigh softball team broke open a one-run game scoring six runs in the top of the seventh inning as the Mountain Hawks handed league-leading Colgate its first league loss 13-6 Saturday morning at Eaton Street Field. Junior Julie Fernandez went 3-for-5 with four RBI for Lehigh which moves to 22-15 overall and ties Colgate for first place in the league at 8-1.

The teams were supposed to play a doubleheader Saturday but game two was postponed due to inclement weather. A make-up date has not yet been announced.

Both offenses had their way on the day as the teams combined for 21 hits including five home runs. The Mountain Hawks also capitalized on four Raider errors while playing a flawless defensive game of their own.

Lehigh scored a run in the top of the first on a walk, an error and a RBI ground out by junior Jen Colquhoun. Colgate answered in the bottom of the frame on a RBI single by Tera Vaughn.

The Mountain Hawks went back in front in the fourth on a RBI infield single by sophomore Rosie Roessel, an error on Raider catcher Nicole Seidhof and a two-out single up the middle by Fernandez.

Colgate used the long ball to pull even in the bottom of the fifth as Emmie Dolfi led off with a home run off sophomore Rebecca Bliss and after a walk, Jennifer Martin hit a two-run homer to tie the game at four.

Lehigh went ahead for good with three runs in the top of the sixth, as senior Carly Potock was hit by a pitch, Roessel walked and junior Audra Wood (4-for-5) reached on an infield single. Senior Alex Cueva brought home the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to center before Fernandez tripled to right field to score two more runs.

The Raiders climbed back within a run as Nicole Seidhof led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run and then Natalie Seidhof brought home Stephanie Hartquist with a double down the right field line.

In the seventh, Lehigh put runners on second and third with two outs and Wood brought them both home with a triple to right center. Cueva and Fernandez then hit back-to-back home runs to put Lehigh up by six. The two-run shot was the first home run of the year for Cueva while Fernandez hit her second. Colquhoun brought home Lehigh's 13th and final run with a RBI single that scored pinch-runner Kristen Mitchell.

Bliss picked up her 11th win of the season as she allowed six runs on ten hits in seven innings. The right hander walked two and struck out four as she moves to 11-4. Rachel LeCoq took the loss for Colgate allowing seven earned runs in 6.2 innings of work. LeCoq struck out eight Mountain Hawks but issued five walks as she falls to 11-6.

Lehigh and Colgate will continue their series on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at noon from Eaton Street Field.
