Mountain Hawks down Bucknell, 1-0, for big Senior Day win

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Sophomore goalkeeper Sierra Segear made 15 saves for her first-career shutout while Abby Tilton scored the game's only goal on her Senior Day to lead the Lehigh field hockey team to a big 1-0 win over Bucknell on Saturday. Tilton's goal at 10:34 proved to be the difference as Segear and the Mountain Hawk defense took over from there, withstanding 17 Bucknell shots in the second to keep the Bison off the scoreboard.
With the win, Lehigh moves to 2-1 in Patriot League play, winners of two straight, three of its last four and four of its last seven. The Mountain Hawks wrap up a successful home slate with a 5-4 record in the friendly confines of Ulrich Field.
Before the game, Mountain Hawk seniors Tilton, Caitlin Donnelly, Allison Kowalski and Madison Ingal were all honored for their hard work and dedication to the program.
“This is a huge win for us,” said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. “We did it as a team today. It's great to get a big Patriot League win, especially on Senior Day.”
The Mountain Hawks controlled play in the early going, earning the game's first penalty corner while unleashing the first shot less than four minutes into the game. Lehigh converted its second chance at 10:34 as Tilton found the back of the cage off another corner.
Tilton made the insert to Donnelly, who slid it over to junior Kim Eng. Eng went on to find Tilton near the far post. The Franklin, N.J. native did the rest, putting away her sixth goal of the season.
Bucknell began picking up the pressure, but the Mountain Hawk defense came up big, and when it got to Segear, she came up with four first-half stops.
The Bison came out of halftime on fire, finishing with 17 shots over the final 35 minutes, 12 on goal as Segear came up with 11 stops while sophomore defender Marie Mignogna made her second defensive save of the afternoon. That included a key save off a Bucknell penalty stroke early in the second half to keep the score 1-0 and give the Mountain Hawks much-needed momentum. Overall, the Lehigh defense thwarted off 10 second-half penalty corners, staying composed under pressure.
Bucknell led the final shot count, 25-7, while the Bison had a 14-6 edge on penalty corners. Segear finished with 15 saves and Mignogna made two defensive stops across Bucknell goalkeeper Erica Perrine, who posted two.
Lehigh returns to action for its final two regular season games on each of the next two Saturdays. The Mountain Hawks travel to archrival Lafayette next Saturday for a noon start before heading to Holy Cross for an 11 a.m. gametime on Saturday, Oct. 29.
