Lehigh plays Columbia to 1-1 draw

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Junior Jana Basubas scored the equalizer late in the second half and senior Lauren Mains made five saves in goal as the Lehigh women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to four behind a 1-1 tie at regionally-ranked Columbia on Sunday. The Lions scored first, but the Mountain Hawks fought back to force their fourth overtime game of the young season.
“It was definitely an even game featuring two different styles of play,” said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. “Both teams had chances. They were tough to score on.”
The first of three Ivy League opponents on the Mountain Hawks' schedule, Columbia entered the game with a 6-2 record, ranked fourth in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional rankings.
An extremely tight affair saw Lehigh hold the shot advantage, 15-13, with each side putting seven on goal. It marks the second consecutive year that the teams have tied by an identical 1-1 final.
The Mountain Hawks' record now stands at 4-1-2 heading into the Patriot League opener on Friday. They enter the conference opener with their fewest losses since 2005, when they were 8-1-1 heading into league play.
“This team has talent,” said Lambinus. “We have the ability to play against [the top teams]. We were every bit as good as Columbia today and it showed with the result.”
After a scoreless first half, Columbia took the 1-0 lead in the 63rd minute off a succession of passes which was capped off when Bevery Leon headed a cross past Mains. Chelsea Ryan fed Marissa Schultz down the right side, who made the cross to Leon.
The Mountain Hawks continued to pressure looking for the equalizer, and they did just that at 77:31 off a direct kick outside the box. Freshman Murphee Greeley opted to play the ball short to Basubas, who fired a shot past Columbia goalkeeper Lillian Klein for her first goal of the season. Greeley picked up the assist to extend her point streak to six games.
“Goals are going to take place,” said Lambinus, when asked about the team's resiliency. “[But] not a lot gets this team down. They don't worry about giving up one goal because they have the ability to score one, two or three in a game.”
Mains finished with five saves while Klein made six. Columbia had eight corner kicks to only one for Lehigh.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Friday when they travel to Army for the Patriot League opener. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
