BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Fresh off a week in which he scored the game-winning goal in overtime in both of Lehigh’s games freshman Dante Fantoni was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. Fantoni scored six goals, handed out two assists and scooped up five ground balls in a pair of wins over nationally ranked foes by the Mountain Hawks.
On April 20 Fantoni scored four goals, including the game-winner in double overtime as the Mountain Hawks scored a dramatic 16-15 victory over No. 9 Villanova. Villanova was the highest ranked opponent Lehigh has beaten since downing No. 7 Georgetown in 1997. Fantoni also picked up four ground balls versus the Wildcats, which were a season high.
In Lehigh’s season finale on April 24 the Mountain Hawks went into Easton and downed archrival and No. 19 Lafayette 10-9 on the strength of Fantoni’s second game-winner in as many games. The freshman standout totaled two goals and two assists on the night and also picked up one ground ball.
For the season Fantoni finished as Lehigh’s leading scorer with 26 goals and 40 points. He also totaled 18 ground balls and six caused turnovers. Fantoni scored multiple goals in seven games and registered five hat tricks.
Lehigh closed out the 2010 season with an 8-7 mark which are the most wins the Mountain Hawks have had under head coach Kevin Cassese. The Brown and White will return a strong nucleus of players in 2011, including nearly its entire offensive unit.
