Mountain Hawks fall to Bucknell on the road

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Lehigh had its hands full with Bucknell on Friday evening as the Mountain Hawks fell to the Bison 14-5 at rainy Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.  Bucknell jumped out to an 8-2 lead after one half and never looked back as the Bison improve to 7-5 overall and 2-3 in the Patriot League.  Jonathan Stumpf and Adam Johnston scored two goals each for Lehigh who falls to 6-7 overall and 1-4 in league play following the setback.

 

Lehigh was credited with 17 shots on the evening and Bucknell countered with 36 attempts.  The Mountain Hawks scooped up 23 ground balls led by Evan Guerrero’s four, but were able to win only eight-of-23 face-offs with Will Scudder earning seven of those wins.  Three different Lehigh players handed out assists and seven different Mountain Hawks caused a turnover.  In goal for the Brown and White Conor Murphy received the start and sent back five shots in 30 minutes of play, while Dan Carr came in after halftime and stopped five shots of his own.

 

Austin Winter totaled a game-high seven points with four goals and three assists for Bucknell, and three other Bison netted two scores.  Jake Clarke won 12 face-offs and scooped up six GBs and as a team Bucknell caused 15 turnovers with Jason Neithamer and Alex Lyons leading the way with three each.  Kyle Feeney went the first 53 minutes in goal and stopped five shots before giving way to Sam Finnell who played the final seven minutes.

Chris Palmer scored the first goal of the evening with 12:16 on the first quarter clock to put Bucknell on top 1-0.  The Bison added two more scores in the quarter and another to begin the second before Stumpf put back-to-back goals on the board which made it a 4-2 game with 11:11 remaining before halftime.  Those were the last goals Lehigh would score in the quarter however and Bucknell strung together five straight as it surged in front 8-2 at halftime.

 

Bucknell’s Charlie Streep opened the third quarter with a goal off a feed from Ryan Klipstein which made it a 9-2 game before Johnston scored with 12:51 left in the quarter to pull the Mountain Hawks within six.  Lehigh then suffered through another tough scoreless stretch and the Bison reeled off five consecutive goals overlapping the third and fourth quarters to go on top 14-3 with only four minutes remaining in the game.  Johnston and Roman Lao-Gosney scored in the final minutes to set the final margin as Lehigh dropped its second straight on the road.


Lehigh wraps up its 2010 home schedule on Tuesday evening when the Mountain Hawks welcome the nationally ranked Villanova Wildcats to the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Action gets underway at 7:00 with live video coverage on Lehighsports.com.
