BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh out shot Army 34-28, including a 15-3 advantage in the final 15 minutes of play, but the Mountain Hawks were only able to produce five goals as they fell to the Black Knights 9-5 on Tuesday evening at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Sophomore Adam Johnston scored two goals for the Brown and White, while Cameron Lao-Gosney, Roman Lao-Gosney and Dante Fantoni each scored once for the Mountain Hawks, who fall to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in the Patriot League.  Three Black Knights, including Jeremy Boltus, Sean O’Sullivan and Garrett Thul, scored two goals apiece for Army, who improves to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the league with the win.

“First off, I’d like to give credit to Army,” Mountain Hawks head coach Kevin Cassese said afterwards.  “I thought they had a simple and effective game plan and they carried it out.”  He continued, “I thought we came out strong, but for some reason in the middle two quarters we fell asleep.  That seems to be a difficult part of the game right now for us, the second and third quarters.  The first and fourth quarters we are playing well but we need to correct that middle part.”

Cassese went onto say, “The Army goal keeper made timely saves throughout the game.  We missed the cage on a few of our shots but he also stepped up and made some big saves.  I think we’re playing hard, we’re competing; we just need to make more plays on the offensive end.  We’re not completing plays and we need to continue to work on that.”

Roman Lao-Gosney was credited with seven of Lehigh’s 34 shot attempts, while Cameron Lao-Gosney unleashed six.  Freshman Dan Carr stopped ten shots on the evening and in the X, junior Will Scudder won 9-of-13 face-offs and scooped up a team-best six ground balls.  Cameron Lao-Gosney added five ground balls, while freshman David DiMaria dished out two assists.

Army goal keeper Tom Palesky stopped 14 shots for the Black Knights and Matt Poulos won 4-of-8 in the X.  O’Sullivan led the visitors with five shot attempts and six different Black Knights scooped up two ground balls on the night.

Roman Lao-Gosney gave Lehigh the first lead of the night with an unassisted goal at the 9:49 mark of the opening quarter, but O’Sullivan responded with back-to-back scores for Army and the Black Knights took a 2-1 lead into the second.

Cameron Lao-Gosney opened the second quarter with an unassisted goal of his own to tie things at two, and Johnston’s man-up goal with 13:19 left before halftime put the Brown and White ahead 3-2.  From there Lehigh’s offense struggled, while Army’s offense was able to generate four more goals as the Black Knights took a 6-3 lead into halftime.

The third quarter was also unkind to the Mountain Hawks as they were shutout 3-0 with Tyler Seymour scoring once and Boltus netting a pair of scores to put Lehigh in a 9-3 hole entering the final 15 minutes of play.

Just like it began the first and second quarters, Lehigh scored the first goal of the fourth, with Johnston taking a feed from DiMaria at the 14:09 mark to pull the Mountain Hawks within five at 9-4.  Unfortunately Lehigh went the next 13:44 without scoring until Fantoni found the back of the net with just 25 ticks on the clock, but at that point it was too little, too late for the Brown and White.

Lehigh remains in the Patriot League as the Mountain Hawks welcome Holy Cross to town on Saturday afternoon.  The Mountain Hawks and Crusaders will get things started at 2:00 on Saturday from the Ulrich Sports Complex.  The game will be shown live on Lehighsports.com.
