CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – After falling behind No. 4 North Carolina 2-0 on Saturday afternoon Lehigh stormed back to tie things at two before the Tar Heels eventually pulled away for a 17-5 victory at Fetzer Field.  All five of the Mountain Hawks’ goals were scored by freshmen or sophomores with Adam Johnston leading the way with two scores as Lehigh falls to 1-1 following the setback.  UNC improves to 3-0 as Jimmy Dunster and Gavin Petracca netted three goals each for the Tar Heels.

Chris Hunt and Tyler Morton put the Tar Heels up 2-0 just over one minute into the game but Johnston answered with Lehigh’s first score of the afternoon with 8:49 on the first quarter clock.  Freshman Dante Fantoni then tied things at two off a feed from classmate Alex Drake with 1:16 to go and that is how the teams remained as they headed into the second.

UNC controlled the second and third quarters as the home team outscored the Mountain Hawks 12-2 during the 30 minutes.  Roman Lao-Gosney netted Lehigh’s second quarter goal with 7:41 on the clock, while Drake took a feed from Lao-Gosney with 4:10 to go in the third for the Mountain Hawks fourth goal of the afternoon.

Lehigh regrouped for the final 15 minutes and played North Carolina tough in the fourth quarter with Johnston scoring off an assist from Fantoni with 8:14 to play in what was the Mountain Hawks’ final score of the day.

Lehigh took 17 shots on the afternoon, led by Johnston with four and Fantoni with three, while junior Will Scudder won 10-of-17 in the X and also scooped up three ground balls.  As a team the Mountain Hawks scooped up 29 ground balls with Dan Carr leading the way with six and Fantoni, Evan Guerrero, Ben Kelley, Baxter Lanius and Jonathan Stumpf scooping up two apiece.  Lanius, Guerrero and Mike Noone caused two turnovers each and Carr sent back five shots in goal in 45 minutes of play.

UNC unleashed 45 shots during the game with Billy Bitter, Dunster and Sean DeLaney totaling six apiece.  Michael Jarvis caused a game-high three turnovers, while Michael Burns won 9-of16 face-offs and Mark Staines won four-of-six.  Charlie McComas was the Tar Heels’ leader in ground balls with eight, while Chris Madalon stopped three shots in goal in over 52 minutes of action.

Lehigh returns to action on Saturday, February 27 when the Mountain Hawks open their home schedule versus the defending Colonial Athletic Association champion Villanova Wildcats.  The opening face-off is set for 1:00 from the Ulrich Sports Complex and all of the action will be broadcast live on Lehighsports.com.
