Lehigh and Navy play to 1-1 draw

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Senior Glynn Fitzer scored an early goal while fellow senior Lauren Mains made three saves as the Lehigh women's soccer played Navy to a 1-1 tie on Friday evening. The Mountain Hawks (8-3-3, 3-1-1 Patriot League) held a 1-0 lead for nearly 66 minutes until the Midshipmen (9-7-2, 2-2-1 PL) forced overtime. With the point, Lehigh does inch closer to clinching its first Patriot League Tournament berth since 2006.
“We played really well,” said head coach Eric Lambinus. “We started out the game in unbelievable fashion. I thought we defended well, except for the one moment, and then we attacked very well. It was one of the better games we've played all season from beginning to end.”
The tie snapped Lehigh's seven-game losing streak at Navy and marks its first positive result in Annapolis since a 1-1 draw in 1995. Lehigh now has 10 points on the season, a single point behind Army, who defeated Bucknell on Friday evening.
“Our chances were unbelievable,” said Lambinus. “We probably had enough opportunities to score four or five goals, but their goalie in the second half made three or four outstanding saves to keep them in the game. We're happy with the way we played, but definitely disappointed with the result.”
The Mountain Hawks took a 1-0 lead at 23:13 when Fitzer scored her fourth goal of the season off a corner kick. The ball dropped to her about 12 yards from the goal, where she turned and blasted a high shot past Navy goalkeeper Alexes Lopez-Shaw for the early lead.
Lehigh continued to control play, leading the shot count, 10-1, at one point until Navy had a succession of chances which led to the game-tying score. Carissa Youker's initial shot was saved by Mains, but the rebound caromed to Kate Herren, who finished it at 86:26.
The Mountain Hawks bounced back with numerous chances bridging the end of regulation and the beginning of overtime. They controlled possession early in the extra session, taking three shots within the first five minutes, including a Liz Carlos chance which was saved by new goalkeeper Hannah Legler.
Lehigh led the final shot count, 15-9 while each team had one corner. Mains finished with three saves while Army's Alexes Lopez-Shaw made two in the first half before Legler entered to make four over the final 65 minutes.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Sunday when they travel to American to play the Eagles. Gametime is set for 1 p.m.
“With the tie tonight, it becomes even more important that we get a result on Sunday,” said Lambinus. “Knowing that we can clinch a playoff spot with a win is important, but the disappointment from today will lead us to be ready for Sunday's game.”
