BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh rowing team opens its 2010-11 season this weekend at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Mass. The two-day event runs from Oct. 23-24 on the Charles River, with the Mountain Hawks scheduled to race on Sunday.
“The first race of the year always brings a certain level of excitement and uncertainty,” said first-year head coach Brian Conley. “Rowing is a sport where you spend countless hours and rowing hundreds of miles for only a few minutes of racing.”
The Head of the Charles is the world's largest two-day rowing event, first held on Oct. 16, 1965.
“We want to be the best, so we'll see where we stand against the best crews in the country,” said Conley. “It's raced in a time trial format, so it is very much on the crews themselves to hold their focus because they could go the whole three-mile race course without ever having a crew next to them.”
Now, 46 years after the first race, the Regatta attracts more than 300,000 spectators to Boston. Today, more than 8,000 athletes from 600 U.S. and international Universities, rowing clubs and institutions compete in 26 different race events. The Regatta grew to a two-day event in 1997.
“Our goal for this weekend is to learn what racing is and to put together a solid race from start to finish,” said Conley. “This means making sure that we are holding our technique together and being consistently aggressive throughout the race. If we are able to accomplish that, we will put ourselves in a position that sets us up for a good season.”
The Lehigh women will compete in the most competitive event, the Championship Eights, set to begin at 3:09 p.m. on Sunday. The race is composed of some of the top crews in the country, including both the NCAA Varsity Eight Champions (Yale) and NCAA Team Champions (Virginia).
Meanwhile, the men will row in the Collegiate Eight, which is set to begin a little earlier on Sunday, at 1:57 p.m. Both crews will begin their respective races in 19th place.
“The Collegiate Eight will be composed of many of the crews that they will see at the end of the year,” said Conley. “Since it is our first race of the year it will be a great place to start and see where the competition is.”
Lehigh also has an alumni men's eight team racing on Saturday at 11:08 a.m.
