Field hockey drops 2-1 nail biter at Bucknell

10/16/2010 11:39:00 PM | Field Hockey

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Kimberly Eng tied the score late in the first half, but Bucknell added the eventual game-winner midway through the second to down the Lehigh field hockey team, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon. For the second straight game, the Mountain Hawks (2-12, 0-3 Patriot League) were tied at the half, but the Bison (6-8, 2-1 PL) converted on a strong final 35 minutes to pull away.

“I thought we were much more composed today,” said head coach Julie Mazer. “Our individual defense was much better. We had much better possession. That's good, but we certainly need to generate more shots and scoring opportunities.”

Bucknell's Marci Richard broke the ice at 19:14 when she scored off a penalty corner after Lehigh senior goalkeeper Jessica Miller made a strong initial save.

The Mountain Hawks bounced back when Eng scored her fourth goal of the season off a restart to pull even at one. Sophomore Carly Smith put a ball on goal off the restart. Bucknell goalkeeper Sarah Zargarpour made the stop, but Eng cleaned up the rebound to make it 1-1 at 30:27.

The Bison impressed in the second half, posting nine shots and five on goal. Miller made a number of sensational saves in the cage, but Bucknell got one past her when Kelly Bruvik scored at 52:19.

“A couple minutes of poor decision making resulted in giving them some more opportunities,” said Mazer. “There was a time frame in which they generated a number of corners. For a couple minutes, we became a little undisciplined.”
Bucknell led the final shot count, 15-5 while it had five penalty corners to three for Lehigh. Miller finished with five saves while Zargarpour had three.

“I thought Bucknell took advantage of its opportunities,” said Mazer. “As coaches, we were pleased with the way we competed for the entire time. In order to win though, you need to generate more scoring chances, so that's something we'll continue to work on.”

Lehigh returns to action next Saturday when it hosts rival Lafayette at Ulrich Field. Gametime is set for 11 a.m. with a Lehigh-Lafayette alumni game will take place at 9 a.m.

“We'll look at film and we'll prepare similarly for this game as we did last week,” said Mazer. “[Lafayette] is always a big game no matter what's happening in your season.”
