BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Members of the Lehigh men’s lacrosse team are set to participate in the Craig J. Geiger charity golf tournament to benefit the Race for Adam Foundation on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at Willowbrook Golf Course in Catasauqua, Pa.  The Race for Adam Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 2005 after seven year old Adam Recke was diagnosed with Neimann-Pick Type C disease. The foundation holds various events throughout the year to raise money in order to increase awareness and fund research opportunities to find a cure for this rare, neurodegenerative disease.

Men’s lacrosse coach Kevin Cassese said the team met Adam two years ago, “Adam came to our game against Bucknell and was the honorary captain. That was my first time meeting Adam and Sean [Adam’s father] and their family and from there we struck up a relationship.”

In 2007, the men’s lacrosse team sent a foursome to participate in the charity golf tournament, and the team decided to get involved again this year.  Senior John Henry McNierney is organizing the event for the men’s lacrosse team because he was part of the foursome two years ago and had previously met Adam and his father.

Cassese said each of the players and coaches are donating ten dollars to the cause, while only four players will participate in the actual golf outing.  Those players include McNierney along with fellow seniors Chris Lubin, Chris Linko and Taylor Castagna.  Cassese said every dollar they donate will go to the foundation.  After subtracting the fee for the golfers, the lacrosse team wants the foundation to use the money in whatever way they please – to hold raffles, putting contests and the like.

McNierney said that one of the team goals is to help out in the community. With each player on the team making a small contribution, they hope to be able to help Adam and his foundation.

The Craig J. Geiger Memorial Golf Tournament is held annually in memory of Craig Geiger, a Whitehall High School baseball player who died unexpectedly in 2007. This year, $1,000 will be donated to a college scholarship fund for a deserving Whitehall baseball player with all other funds to benefit the Race for Adam Foundation.
