14 newcomers join men's lacrosse program

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Smith Family Head Lacrosse Coach Kevin Cassese welcomed a talented group of newcomers to the Mountain Hawks program this semester as 14 student-athletes set foot on the Lehigh campus to begin their college careers. Cassese has attracted talent that spans six states, including California, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania and includes four All-Americans. “There is a lot of excitement surrounding this group of freshmen,” Cassese commented. “It is a large group, it is a diverse group and it is a talented group. I have been impressed by the strength of character and overall leadership abilities that the members of this class have demonstrated over the course of their high school careers and during their short time on campus here at Lehigh. I look forward to working closely with them individually and collectively during their careers as Mountain Hawks.”
Derek Bogorowski is a midfielder from Newton, Pennsylvania, where he played for LaSalle College High School. There, he served as a captain his senior year, and was named All-Catholic and All-State. His high school team won two Pennsylvania State championships as well as three Philadelphia Catholic League championsips. His club team, Duke’s Lacrosse Club also won two Champ Camp National championships. Off the field, Bogorowski is a member of the National Honor Society and First and Second Honor Roll. He Received a Scholastic “L” award, and is also a National Honor Society peer tutor.
A goalkeeper from Warminster, Pennsylvania, Dan Carr was named the number-two player to watch by the phillylacrosse.com in 2009. As a senior, Carr had a 70.9 save percentage and totaled 461 saves. He was named Honorable Mention All-Inter-AC, served as team captain, and received the Coaches Award. As a junior, he helped lead Penn Charter to the EPSLA State semifinals before eventually losing to Malvern. He also participated in Jake Reed’s Nike Blue-Chip camp. Carr is a multi-sport athlete having also played water polo, football, and wrestling. When he is not being active on the field, Carr is also an honor roll student, having been a National Merit Scholarship finalist.
David DiMaria comes to Lehigh from Half Hollow Hills West High School in Dix Hills, New York. An All American, two-time All-County, and two-time All-Division selection, DiMaria earned the title of team MVP as a senior. In 2007, he was named Suffolk County League Rookie of the Year. DiMaria is a multi-sport athlete with accomplishments in football and basketball, in addition to his impressive lacrosse abilities. In football, he played the quarterback position, earning Second-Team All-Long Island, All-County, and All-Division honors. In basketball, he was the League 5 Defensive Player of the Year, helping lead his team to a county championship in 2008.
Also joining the team, from Upper Arlington, Ohio is Alex Drake. An attacker, Drake was an All-American, in addition to earning the titles of Ohio Player of the Year and Ohio Attackman of the Year. As a senior captain, he earned First-Team All-Midwest, First-Team All-State, and First-Team All-Region. Drake was also given the Outstanding Attackman Award, Award for Most Team Goals, and Award for Most Team Assists from his high school. A two-sport athlete at UA, Alex also captained the football team, earned first team All-Conference honors and rushed for over 1,000 yards on the gridiron. In addition to his accomplishments on the field, Drake also received a Scholar Athlete Award, and graduated Cum Laude.
Dante Fantoni is an attacker from Hauppauge, New York, where he attended St. Anthony’s. His senior season, Fantoni led the team in goals with 48. He also recorded 33 assists for the season ending with a total of 81 points. As a junior, Fantoni led the team in goals (38), assists (26), and points (64). He was named MSG Player of the Game twice versus Delbarton and Chaminade in the championship, and was named an All-League Attackman. Fantoni is also a member of the honor roll, and served as Vice President of the St. Anthony’s Leadership Team.
From San Francisco, California is Carlton Fisher. A three year varsity lacrosse player at California powerhouse St. Ignatius Prep, Fisher finished his high school career with a 58-2 overall record. As a senior, he was team captain and co-MVP. He was also the leading scorer for his high school, and earned All-American honors his senior year. Fisher is also a member of the Semper Fi Club.
Brian Hess is a midfielder from Ownings Mills, Maryland, having previously attended Deerfield Academy. Hess attended McDonogh High School where in his senior season he served as captain, totaling 25 goals and 19 assists. Hess was named First-Team All-Examiner and Second-Team All-Digital Sports. His team made the semi-finals of the MIAA playoffs both his junior and senior seasons. He was a multi-sport athlete, also playing football and basketball. At Deerfield Academy, Hess started on the football, basketball, and lacrosse teams. In lacrosse his team went 15-1, finishing tenth in the country. He was the number seven ranked post-graduate by Inside Lacrosse and also served as the captain of the basketball team. Off the field, Hess was a consistent member of the honor roll throughout his high school career.
Kyle Holechek comes to Lehigh from Reistertown, Maryland. An accomplished defender, Holechek ended his high school career earning First-Team honors for the Towson Times and receiving his school’s Team Leadership Award. His senior season, Kyle captained the Loyola Blakefield team that was an MIAA semifinalist. As a junior, his team won the MIAA championship and he was a member of the Under Armour Underclassmen team. Holechek is a multi-sport athlete having been named MIAA First-Team Goalie in ice hockey his senior year. Off the field, he is a member of the Maryland Lacrosse Club (MLC) and a volunteer for the Baltimore Saints Ice Hockey Organization, an ice hockey program for children and adults who have experienced a traumatic brain injury of a developmental disability.
A midfielder from Lawrenceville Prep, Bryan Hopper served as a co-captain his senior year, helping lead his team to a 14-6 record. He received Honorable Mention All-State, All-MAPL, All-Area Second-Team, and All-Prep First-Team honors. As a senior, he also won the Pershing Award for inspirational play. Hopper earned Second-Team All-Division honors as a junior, and helped lead his team to a 17th place national ranking. Off the field, Hopper is a member of the deans list and high honors, in addition to being his house president, and a tour guide.
Ben Kelley is a defender from Columbus, Ohio where he attended St. Charles Prep. A four year varsity starter, Kelley served as captain his junior and senior seasons. He was a three-time defensive MVP, and two-time Team MVP. Kelley received First-Team All-Region Honors his junior and senior year and first-team All-State honors as a senior. In his high school career, Kelley recorded a total of 15 goals. Off the field, he is a member of the honor roll, having maintained a GPA of 3.3 or higher throughout his high school career. He also received the Student Atlhete Award, and was involved in the Interact Club in addition to volunteering for the Salesian Boys and Girls Club of Columbus.
A midfielder from Newport Beach, California, Noah Molnar is a two-time All-American selection from Corona del Mar High School. In his senior season, in addition to his All-American selection, Molnar was CDMHS Player of the Year, Orange County Player of the Year, Pacific Coast League MVP, and the 12th ranked senior in the west by westsidelax.com. In 2008, Molnar was also named Pacific Coast League MVP, as well as a 2008 High Roller, Adrenaline Shootout All Star, First-Team All-County, CDMHS MVP, and also earned an All-American nomination. His freshman and sophomore seasons, Molnar was an OCLA all-star, was named First-Team All-Pacific Coast League, First-Team All-County, and CDMHS Midfielder of the Year. Molnar is a two-sport athlete, earning First-Team All-Pacific Coast League honors in football, in addition to breaking the school record for most interceptions in a game with four in 2007.
Michael Noone is a defender from Jenkintown, Pennsylvania. Noone played for LaSalle College High School, where he was a two-time All-League selection, two time All-Catholic selection, and ranked in the top 30 defenseman by Inside Lacrosse Magazine. Noone helped lead his high school to four Philadelphia Catholic League championships and two Pennsylvania state championships. Noone plays club lacrosse for Twist Lacrosse and Duke’s Lacrosse Club. Off the field, he is a member of the National Honor Society.
From Nesconset, New York comes Kyle Sheridan. A defender from Smithtown East High School, Sheridan was a four year starter and two year captain. His senior season, he was an All-County selection, and was named All-League in 2008. He helped lead his team to three Super 6 championships and a Long Island Empire State Team Gold Medal in 2008. A two-sport athlete, Sheridan is also accomplished in basketball, where he was a 2009 All-County Academic selection, Booster Club Scholarship recipient, and Kenneth Watson Memorial Scholarship (Team Leadership) recipient. Off the field, he is an AP Scholar with distinction, and a four year member of the Honor Roll.
Rounding out the freshman class is Ryan Snyder, a midfielder from the Kent School in Connecticut. In his senior season, Snyder was a team captain, earning the team’s MVP award. He was named First-Team All-Western New England, and was selected to play in the New England East vs. West Senior All-Star Game. He was runner-up for Midfielder of the Year in Western New England, and was his team’s leading scorer with 32 goals and 16 assists for 46 points in 16 games. Snyder picked up 182 ground balls, and won 187 of 245 face-offs for a win percentage of 76. As a senior, Snyder also was captain of the hockey team. Off the field, he is a member of the Honor and High Honor Roll.
Lehigh returns 18 letterwinners for the 2010 season including senior Evan Guerrero who garnered All-Patriot League honors a season ago. The Mountain Hawks will begin preparations for the season with fall practice and conditioning sessions.
