BETHLEHEM, Pa. – With the help of Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese, the Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse earned their first victory of the 2009 season on Saturday May 30, as Boston downed the Chicago Machine 16-14 at historic Soldier Field. Cassese finished the game with one goal, one point, one shot and one ground ball. Cassese’s goal came during a decisive third quarter in which Boston outscored the Machine 7-2 to take a 14-6 lead entering the fourth quarter.
After opening up that eight-goal lead heading into the final quarter, Boston was forced to hold off a furious rally by Chicago as the Machine scored eight goals in the quarter. Chris Eck and Paul Rabil netted scores for the Cannons however to end any hope of a Chicago comeback.
Through three games with Boston Cassese has found the back of the net three times, totaled three points, unleashed six shots and scooped up three ground balls. His three goals rank third best for Boston, while his three points are sixth.
Cassese and the Cannons are back in action on Friday, June 5 when Boston travels to face the Long Island Lizards beginning at 7:00 on the campus of Hofstra University. Long Island upended the Cannons in the 2009 season opener on May 16 by a score of 9-8 in Boston.
