Lehigh falls in Lewisburg vs. No. 19 Bison 18-10

LEWISBURG, Pa. – After falling behind by five goals on two different occasions, Lehigh got to within three in the fourth quarter, but down the stretch the Mountain Hawks could not hold off the Bucknell offense as the No. 19 Bison pulled away for an 18-10 victory on Saturday evening at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Senior Ricky Cornetta had a five-point night with three goals and two assists for Lehigh, while Perry Menzies scored four times and handed out one assist in helping Bucknell remain unbeaten in the Patriot League at 5-0.
Cornetta led Lehigh with nine shots on the night, while freshman Adam Johnston was credited with seven of the Mountain Hawks 33 attempts. Will Scudder won 19-of-28 face-offs and scooped up a team-best seven ground balls, with Kyle Gentile causing a team-high three turnovers. Max Dahlem scored two goals for Lehigh with Johnston and Chris Linko both handing out assists. Morgan Haller played all 60 minutes in goal and stopped eight shots.
Bucknell shot the ball 39 times with Austin Winter taking seven and Menzies and Mike Danylyshyn with six. The Bison totaled 30 ground balls for the game, led by Billy Haire, Jake Clarke and Jason Neithamer with four apiece. Clarke won nine face-offs and also caused a turnover with Haire leading the Bison with three CTs. Matt Antonelli played 47 minutes in goal for the Bison and stopped seven shots, while Nick Sciubaa played nine minutes and sent back three Lehigh shots.
Menzies scored the game’s first two goals before Cornetta got Lehigh on the board with 7:32 left on the first quarter clock. Menzies scored his third goal of the quarter though to push Bucknell’s lead back to two. Bienemann got Lehigh to within one score, but Tim Brandau scored for the home team, making it a 4-2 game after one quarter.
Austin Winter opened the second with a goal off a feed from Billy Haire to push BU’s lead to three, but Roman Lao-Gosney and Max Dahlem pulled the Mountain Hawks to within one with back-to-back goals.
Mele fed Winter for another goal though and Doug Buckley, Jake Clarke, and Danylyshyn,all found the back of the net to give the home team a 9-4 lead with 1:58 left before halftime. Chris Lubin stopped the Bison run with a goal off an assist from Cornetta and Cornetta then scored two goals in the final 11 seconds to make the score 9-7 in favor of Bucknell at the half.
Charlie Streep scored the first goal of the second half off a feed from Menzies to put the Bison ahead by three, and Menzies and Danylyshyn added two more scores to make the score 12-7 after three.
Lehigh got to within four when Dahlem scored a man-up goal off another assist from Cornetta and Rich Bradley pulled the Brown and White to within three when he scored with 10:54 on the clock. Chris Lubin assisted on the score that made it a 12-9 contest. That was the last goal Lehigh would score until 1:17 remained however as Bucknell went on a 6-0 run over a span of 7:04 to remain unbeaten in the Patriot League.
Lehigh returns to action on Tuesday when the Mountain Hawks hit the road again, this time heading to Worcester to take on the Holy Cross Crusaders. The opening face-off is set for 4:00.
