Lehigh closes out spring break with loss to PSU

LAKE WORTH, Fla. – The Mountain Hawks finished their spring break trip up with a 15-5 loss to Penn State at the Santaluces Complex. Lehigh falls to 3-11 with the loss, while the Nittany Lions improve to 5-5.

Ken Longernecker was charged with the loss after going 2.0 innings and giving up five runs. Lehigh fell behind by as much as 11-0 in its final game in Florida.

“They hit the ball hard pretty much the whole game,” Lehigh head coach Sean Leary said. “It’s been a rough week for our pitchers.”

Lehigh’s offense came to life in the eighth inning, when it scored four runs to cut the deficit to 13-5. But Penn State responded with two more runs in the bottom of the inning to get the lead back to double digits to stay.

Lehigh registered nine hits on the day, with Mark Bernhard and Geoff Campbell each recording multi-hit games. The Mountain Hawks got runs batted in from Campbell, Andy Russell, Brendan Pifer and two from Jim McConlogue.

Penn State put up three runs in the first to show their ability right off the bat. The talented Penn State offense scored 10 runs in the first four innings as Lehigh struggled to find a rhythm pitching the ball. The Nittany Lions hit Lehigh’s pitching staff up for 20 hits, with all six Mountain Hawks pitchers being charged with at least one earned run.

“We’re anxious to get back and start practice again,” Leary said. “We have a lot to do when we get back. We learned a lot of things, and we’re going to need to improve for next weekend and for Patriot League play.”

The Mountain Hawks return to action on Friday when they travel to Fairfax, Va. to take on George Mason.
