Lehigh downed by Delaware 9-5 on the road

NEWARK, Del. – Lehigh had its two-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday evening as the Mountain Hawks were upended by the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens 9-5 at Rullo Stadium. Five different Mountain Hawks scored, but Lehigh was ultimately done in during the third quarter when Delaware outscored the Brown and White 4-0. With the loss Lehigh falls to 3-7, while the Blue Hens improve to 3-6.
Lehigh was credited with 29 shots for the game, while Delaware totaled 37. Both teams scooped up 33 ground balls, with Will Scudder leading the Mountain Hawks with five. Scudder was also 7-of-17 in the X. Lehigh caused 11 turnovers as a team, led by Trevor Stapleton’s two, while in goal, Morgan Haller went the entire 60 minutes and sent back 14 shots.
Mark Steverson led Delaware with five ground balls, while Dan Cooney won 8-of-11 face offs and Justin Martinelli caused a pair of turnovers. Noah Fossner stopped 14 shots in goal for the home team and Steverson and Curtis Dickson both unleashed eight shots.
Delaware took the first lead of the game as Kevin Kaminski scored off an assist from Mark Steverson with 11:49 on the first quarter clock. Lehigh tied the game at one when Scudder won the ensuing face-off, and found Max Dahlem, who put the ball into the back of the net, knotting the score at one. The Blue Hens then took the lead back when Steverson netted a goal off a feed from Grant Kaleikau with 5:21 remaining in the quarter. Adam Johnston tied things up at two however with 1:14 left in the quarter when he scored off an assist from Brian Bienemann.
The Blue Hens went back in front on the strength of a Steverson goal with 12:08 left before halftime. Martin Cahill assisted on the score. Ricky Cornetta tied the game for the third time less than two minutes later as he netted goal number 18 for the season. The Mountain Hawks then took their first lead of the game when Bienemann took a feed from Dahlem and found the back of the net to send Lehigh into halftime up 4-3.
Delaware controlled the third quarter, outscoring the Brown and White 4-0. Josh Coveleski tied the score at four when he scored a man-up goal with 5:26 left in the quarter, and Curtis Dickson put the home team up 5-4 when he scored at the 3:28 mark. Coveleski and Cahill closed the quarter with back-to-back scores in a matter of 50 seconds to send the Blue Hens into the final 15 minutes of play up 7-4.
Dickson put the home team up by four with 9:35 left in the game, but Cameron Lao-Gosney stopped the Blue Hens run as he found the back of the net 1:15 later. That made it an 8-5 game. Steverson added a goal with 2:26 left to put Lehigh in a four-goal hole however, and all but seal the win for the Blue Hens.
Lehigh will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when the Mountain Hawks play host to the Bryant Bulldogs at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Game time is set for 3:00.
