Mountain Hawks get it right in OT this time

10/15/2003 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer

Philadelphia, PA –For the second straight game, the Mountain Hawks found themselves trailing 2-0 in the second half.  And, for the second consecutive game, they came back to force overtime.  Thankfully that was as far as the comparisons go, as Friday night Lehigh (6-3, 1-1) was able to put in the winning goal in double overtime, beating St. Joseph’s 3-2.

Trailing 2-0 with only 15 minutes left in the game, freshman Meghan Duesing took a pass from Jocelyn Helwig and scored her second goal of the season to close the gap to one.  Then, with just five minutes left in regulation, freshman Karilyn Anderson scored her first goal in a Mountain Hawk uniform to tie the game at 2-2. The game then went into double overtime for the second straight game.

In the second OT, with just over a minute left, Adrienne Grunwald took an indirect kick from just outside the box.  The ball was redirected at the goal by Gina Lewandowski, and Anderson was there to put in the rebound for the game winner and her second score on the night.
It was a difficult game for the Mountain Hawks, as they played on a turf field for the first time this season.

Head coach Manny Oudin said the different surface was definitely a factor. “You have to adjust your game because of it,” said Oudin, “and although we practiced on turf the last couple days, its nothing compared to playing on it for an entire season. We spotted St. Joseph’s (2-3-1) two goals – but I was proud to see the team able to come back and get the victory this time.”
Oudin was happy with the comeback, but said they need to stop.  “Obviously it’s great to see the team has so much heart and determination.  But we cannot keep digging ourselves into these holes before we turn it on, that will really hurt us in league play.”

Gina Lewandowski and Jocelyn Helwig each had two assists on the night to aid the Mountain Hawk effort. Lehigh returns home on Sunday to face Niagara. The game will be broadcast live on Lehigh’s website at www.lehigh.edu.  Game time is set for 12:00.
