Anderson strikes again in Mountain Hawks victory

10/15/2003 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer

– After trailing at the half for the third straight game, Lehigh (7-3, 1-1) persevered in sloppy conditions Sunday afternoon to beat Niagara 2-1. The Mountain Hawks moved to an all-time best four games over .500 with the victory.

Although seemingly overmatched, Niagara broke through on its first scoring opportunity. Six minutes into the game, Rosie Luzak got loose on a breakaway. Goalkeeper Erin Iwaskiewicz came out to challenge her, but Luzak managed to keep the ball away from her as Iwaskiewicz went to the ground.  Facing the open net, Luzak then scored easily to give Niagara the lead 1-0.

After outshooting Niagara (3-5-1) 10-2 in the first half but failing to score, the Mountain Hawks kept the pressure up in the second half.  Lehigh finally got on board at the 53:00 mark, with freshman Karilyn Anderson scoring her third goal in the last two games to tie it up 1-1. Lehigh then took the lead for good with just over 12 minutes to play in the game, as junior Jocelyn Helwig made a perfect pass to give Lauren Calabrese a breakaway opportunity of her own.  Calabrese took advantage, putting the ball past the outstretched hands of Niagara keeper Katie Owings to the left side of the net for the game winner.  Helwig finished with two assists on the day.

Coach Manny Oudin continues to be impressed with his team’s performance in the face of adversity. “We were able to come back again,” said Oudin, “and I think it was tougher today with the wet conditions of the field. This has been a tough physical challenge for the team, playing three games in the last five days, but now they will be able to have a few days to rest up before the next conference game.”

The Mountain Hawks have the week off before playing at Bucknell next Sunday in a Patriot League tilt. Game time is set for 1:00.
