Mountain Hawks set to make a splash in 2004-05

The Lehigh men saw five swimmers named All-Patriot League in 2004 and all five are back on
Leading the way is senior Ross Green, the 2004 Patriot League Champion in the 200 yard Individual Medley and the winner of the Mountain Hawks’ Most Valuable Swimmer award.
Team Captains, senior Joey Beagan, diver Pat Ryan and junior Grant Flothmeier will be looked upon for leadership. Ryan and Flothmeier were both All-Patriot League selections a year ago and had strong performances at the League Championships. Ryan finished fourth in both the one and three meter fives while Flothmeier finished second in the 100 yard breaststroke and third in the 200 yard breaststroke. As a freshman Flothmeier broke the school record in the 100 yard breaststroke and last year was the recipient of the Coaches Award.
Also back in the mix are senior Steve Greidanus, Jason Koch, juniors Dan Buschmann, Sean Herman and Jason O’Koren all of whom put forth solid efforts at the Patriot League Championships.
Sophomore Tom Gilbert is coming off a freshman campaign which saw him named to the All-Patriot League team after a pair of top ten finishes at the League Championships. Fellow sophomores John Sisk and Chris Caywood will be counted upon to build upon last years’ successes.
Coach Herb will also look to freshmen Jonathan Kearney, Mike Hay, Eugene Johnston, Calvin Smiley and Bradley Shufelt to step in and contribute as the Mountain Hawks try to make some noise in the very competitive Patriot League.
On the women’s side four letter winners are gone from the team that went 4-5 and placed fifth at the Patriot League championships. Two All-Patriot League performers return from a team that broke nine school records a year ago, giving first year coach Rob Herb a reason for optimism heading into the upcoming season.
Anchoring the team will be junior Linda Hendrixson. A first team All-Patriot League selection the last two seasons, Hendrixson broke her own school records in the 200 and 400 yard individual medley and added a third individual school record in the 200 yard breaststroke. Hendrixson was also a member of two school record setting relay teams.
Sophomore Julie Mitchell burst onto the scene a year ago, setting school records in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke as she picked up two individual top five finishes at the Patriot League Championships, as she was named All-Patriot League.
Senior Captains Krissy Blaston and Jennamarie Devito will be counted upon to provide leadership to the team along with fellow experienced veterans Amanda Warrick and Dana Berkowitz.
The Mountain Hawks should get contributions from a junior class that includes Heather Ford, Jennifer Orellana and Alyssa Zellner, all three of whom placed at the League Championships a year ago.
Coach Herb is looking for immediate contributions from a talented class of freshmen that includes Sherri Pickens, Annie Grossinger and Kelsey Hunter.
“The league is a lot tougher,” Herb said. “Our girls are dedicated and determined, they will step up.”
The Lehigh diving program returns its core contributors from last year’s season. Although the squad is small in numbers, three of the four divers on the roster are veterans. They have the talent and the experience to make a splash in the Patriot League.
Senior captain Pat Ryan will be counted upon to lead the way for the men. A two-year captain, Ryan finished fourth at the Patriot League Championships in both the one and three meter dives. The two-time Lehigh Diver of the Year hopes to put together a solid year in his senior season. Also returning to the men’s team is junior David Edelstein, who finished 10th in the one meter and 11th in the three meter in 2003 and is expected to come back strong after being injured last season. The Mountain Hawks will also look to freshman Clark Cohen to make an immediate impact in the pool.
Junior Laura Gray will be looked upon to carry the torch as Lehigh’s lone woman diver. Gray is a solid, consistent diver who finished fourth in the one meter at the Patriot League Championships and posted a score of 234.00, good for fourth all-time at Lehigh.
The Mountain Hawks open up the 2004-05 season on Saturday October 23, when they face Drexel and William and Mary at the Drexel Relays. The meet gets underway at
