Annapolis, MD – Ross Green and Linda Hendrixson led the charge for the Mountain Hawks during the first day of the Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships, as the teams broke numerous school records on their way to a fifth place start at the events.
Green won the 200 IM with a school record time of 1:50.96, nearly three seconds faster than his nearest competitor. The win was impressive for Green, especially considering his best event, the butterfly, is still to come. The men’s 400 medley relay team of Tom Gilbert, Grant Flothmeier, Ross Green, and Sean Herman finished third in a time of 3:22.77, also a new school mark.
For the women, a slew of bests were topped, led by Hendrixson in the 200 IM. Though she did not defend her Patriot League title, she did have the best individual finish of the day for the Mountain Hawk women, taking second in the event in a time of 2:05.85, breaking her own school record. Aubra Hall of Navy took first in the event in a Patriot League and pool record 2:03.19.
Hendrixson was also part of the Lehigh relay teams that put on an impressive display, setting new school marks in both relay events on the day. They finished third in the 400 medley, as the team of Julie Mitchell, Hendrixson, Heather Ford, and Becky Hiro finished in a time of 3:55.48. As part of that team, Julie Mitchell also set a new mark in the 100 backstroke with a time of 58:25. Earlier, the team of Linsey Kokal, Caitlin Fiedler, Alysa Zellner and Becky Hiro recorded a new best of 1:36.96 in the 200 free relay.
Head coach John Morrison was happy with the team’s effort and ready to continue the events. “The first day is always our worst,” said Morrison, “but I am pleased with where we are. We got a lot of our underclassmen in the pool today, and they got a lot of the nerves out of their system. We are right where we want to be, and we are definitely ready to roll for tomorrow.”
Colgate leads on the women’s side after the first day, and homestanding Navy leads on the men’s side. The second day of the three-day event begins tomorrow at
