Olympic medalist stops by swimming camp

Kristy Kowal, a former 2000 Olympic silver medallist and Wilson-Westlawn graduate, shared her knowledge and experience with Lehigh’s coaching staff and camp participants at Lehigh’s swimming and diving camp on Tuesday.

Along with being a silver medallist in the 200-meter breaststroke in the 2000 games, Kowal was privileged enough to receive the 2000 NCAA Swimmer of the Year Award while attending the University of Georgia.

Kowal was excited by the campers she encountered at Lehigh. "The positive experience at Lehigh was due to the children’s eagerness to learn and their positive attitudes," Kowal said. The focal point of the appearance by Kowal was so that she could install the children with the notion that success might take awhile. "I want the children to realize that success does not come immediately. They might fail once, twice or even a third time before they experience success. I don’t want them to let this potential failure discourage them from competing."

Ending Thursday, Lehigh’s first session of summer swim camp got off to the right start. The next session begins this Saturday with hopes of continued success.
