Lincoln, NE – Pitching rules in the NCAA Tournament, and though Lehigh’s was good, Florida Atlantic’s was a little better Thursday night, as the Owls ended the Mountain Hawks’ season with a 3-0 win. The Mountain Hawks put together a late rally in the seventh inning, but fell shy in getting shut out for the second time in the tourney.
The game started out similar to Lehigh’s first game against
The score would remain that way until the top of the seventh, when the Owls would add a pair of insurance runs, taking advantage of a Lehigh miscue as Shana Treon’s throw home from centerfield was offline.
For most of the game, Lehigh could do no damage against Florida Atlantic starter Amanda Morin (20-7), who carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Lehigh finally got their offense going, as Mary Wieder doubled with one out to start a rally. After Katherine Wegert walked and Liz Gripp singled to load the bases, the Mountain Hawks had a chance with only one out. But Morin settled down, striking out Kelly Kliewer and getting Mendy Martin to pop up to short to end the game. Morin finished the game allowing just two hits and striking out eight for the complete game shutout.
Lehigh finishes the season with a 40-17-2 record, while Florida Atlantic improves to 55-17 and moves on to face the winner of Mississippi State-California on Friday afternoon.
