BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh senior Lisa Sweeney has been named the Patriot League’s Pitcher of the Week it was announced on Monday. Sweeney pitched in five of the Mountain Hawks’ six games last week, picking up four victories and a save. She shut-out arch rival Lafayette on back-to-back days as Lehigh swept a four game series from the Leopards and extending its overall winning streak to 12 games.
On Wednesday, Sweeney earned the victory in Lehigh’s 5-1 win over Marist, a game in which she struck out 10 Red Foxes while allowing just one run on four hits.
Sweeney pitched in all four games against Lafayette. In game one of the series, she fired a complete-game shutout and added ten strikeouts for her 13th win of the season. In the nightcap, the Lumberton, N.J. came on in relief with Lehigh holding a 1-0 lead and she promptly thwarted a Lafayette rally in the sixth, before the Mountain Hawks tacked on four insurance runs in the bottom of the inning. The save was the eighth of Sweeney’s career and her first since 2007.
Sunday, Sweeney earned the win in both games versus the Leopards, as Lehigh moved its Patriot League record to 11-1. She followed the four-hitter in game one on Saturday with a six-hitter, her fifth shutout of the season as the Mountain Hawks prevailed in the opener 2-0. In game two, Sweeney came out of the bullpen with three scoreless innings of two-hit ball. Sweeney allowed just two earned runs in 26 innings, while totaling 36 strikeouts.
On the season, Sweeney is now 15-8, while her earned run average has dropped to 2.66. Sweeney, who has won her last eight decisions, leads the Patriot League in wins, shutouts and strikeouts (166).
