Lehigh set to host Cornell on Friday night

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh looks to even its record at 1-1 on Friday night as the Mountain Hawks play host to the Big Red of Cornell. The Mountain Hawks are looking to bounce back after dropping their season opener to Temple 3-1 in a game that started Saturday night, and was eventually completed on Sunday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks battled Temple tough, playing to a 1-1 tie through the first 35 minutes, before the Owls took control in the second half.

Freshman Claire Horn netted the Mountain Hawks lone goal against Temple. Her first half strike tied the game at one, and helped swing momentum in Lehigh’s favor. Lehigh’s momentum however was slowed by the lightning delay, and in Sunday’s second half, Lehigh was held without a shot by Temple, as the Owls took the lead with a pair of goals. After scoring in her first career game, Horn will get another treat on Friday, as she will face her older sister Abbi, who is a junior midfielder, and one of the top returnees for the Big Red. Freshman goalkeeper Jessica Miller did her part against the Owls, stopping 12 shots including a penalty stroke.

Cornell opens its season with Friday night’s contest against the Mountain Hawks. The Big Red were second in the Ivy League a year ago with a 4-3 league mark and 7-9 overall record. Cornell returns plenty of firepower with top scorers Brenna Gulotta, Katlyn Donoghue, Abbi Horn, and Helena Haas all back. Junior Shannon Prescott and senior Lizzie Goldblatt share the goalkeeping duties for the Big Red.

The Big Red has had Lehigh’s number throughout the years, as Cornell holds a 14-1-1 advantage in the series. Cornell has won the last 12 meetings and is undefeated in the last 13, with Lehigh’s last victory coming back in 1993. The Big Red won last year’s meeting 3-1 in Ithaca, N.Y. Kara Zweizig netted Lehigh’s only goal.

Friday night’s game gets underway at 7 p.m. from the Ulrich Sports Complex.
