Mountain Hawks announce 2007 schedule

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Nine home contests and a pair of games against 2006 NCAA tournament teams highlight Lehigh’s 2007 field hockey schedule, announced by head coach Julie Mazer. The 17 game slate features several new non-league opponents for the Mountain Hawks, who will be looking to return to the Patriot League tournament for the third time in four seasons in 2007.

“We’ve changed our non-league schedule around and added some tough opponents,” said Mazer, who begins her fifth season as head coach. “We should face some strong challenges early on, but I think this is a schedule that we can be successful against, and one that will prepare us well for our Patriot League games. We want to get back to the Patriot League tournament, and it’s important for us to be playing our best hockey in our league games.”

Lehigh will begin the 2007 season with a pair of games at home. The season kicks off on Saturday August 25 against Temple. The Mountain Hawks will be looking for revenge against the Owls after dropping a controversial 2-1 overtime decision to Temple in last year’s season opener.

After hosting Ivy League foe Cornell on August 31, the Mountain Hawks will take to the road for the first time, visiting West Chester on September 2 and Fairfield three days later. The Stags are one of three new non-league opponents the Mountain Hawks will face in 2007.

The Brown and White will return home to face Georgetown on September 8, then will play their next two games on the road, with visits to schedule newcomer Saint Francis (Pa.) and Columbia. That two game trip will be followed by a three game home stand, in which Lehigh will begin Patriot League play against Bucknell on Saturday night September 29. Before opening the league season against the Bison, Lehigh will entertain non-league foes La Salle (September 21) and Villanova (September 23)

October kicks off with the annual Lehigh-Lafayette showdown in Easton on the sixth. After returning home to face Rider on October 10, the Mountain Hawks will begin the stretch run with three tough challenges away from home. The three-game trek begins in Worcester, Massachusetts with an October 13 showdown against Patriot League runner-up Holy Cross. Four days later, Lehigh will head to New Jersey to take on the Princeton Tigers, who advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament a year ago. The road trip concludes in Washington, D.C. as the Mountain Hawks will face four-time defending league champion American in a rematch of last year’s thriller in which Lehigh erased a four-goal second half deficit before losing in double overtime.

The final two games of the regular season will be played at the Ulrich Sports Complex with Lehigh hosting Drexel in a non-league clash on October 24 and Colgate in the regular season finale on October 27.

The top four teams in the Patriot League will qualify for the tournament, held November 3 and 4 on the campus of the highest seed.

The Mountain Hawks will open the regular season against Temple on Saturday August 25 at 7 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
