Bethlehem, PA – Seven Mountain Hawk field hockey players have been named to the 2001 National Academic Squad by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). To qualify for the team, a player must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or better and be a starter or key reserve on her team.
Of the seven Lehigh selections, four were seniors last season. Maureen Banfe, Stephanie Hahn, Jane Knowles, and Jenny Lehman were all named to the NFHCA team. Banfe, a double-major in biology and pre-med, boasts a cumulative GPA of 3.46. She started nine times last season, logging nearly 300 minutes of action on the turf. Stephanie Hahn, a finance major, holds a 3.77 cumulative GPA. The midfielder started all 17 games for Lehigh last season, and was a key ingredient in the Mountain Hawks’ late-season turnaround. Tri-captain Jane Knowles holds a 3.78 GPA as a marketing major. Knowles was second on the team, registering six assists on the season. Tri-captain Jenny Lehman rounds out the seniors on the squad. The finance major led Lehigh in points scored as a junior, and tied for the top spot in goals scored as a senior.
Lehigh boasts three underclassmen on the squad. Junior goalkeeper Margo Smith holds a 3.46 GPA as a business major. Smith started five times in the cage for Lehigh last season, registering 28 saves. Sophomore back Katie Mannion has posted a 3.52 cumulative GPA as an engineering major. Mannion started all 17 games for Lehigh, helping anchor the defense. Rounding out Lehigh’s National Academic Squad selections is sophomore Heather Majczan. Majczan is an Integrated Business and Engineering major, boasting a 3.87 cumulative GPA. The back was having a strong season before a torn ACL sidelined her for the team’s final nine games.
After a slow start, the Mountain Hawks turned the corner and won five of their final nine contests. Lehigh ended the season with a Patriot League record of 3-4, and was one win shy of qualifying for the league tournament.
