Monmouth edges Lehigh in overtime

Bethlehem, PA - The Lehigh Mountain Hawks (0-3) fell to the Hawks of Monmouth University (1-1) by a score of 2-1 in sudden victory overtime at Lehigh’s Ronald J. Ulrich Field on Tuesday night.
Monmouth jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead at 6:51 when last year’s Northeast Conference Player of the Year, junior forward Gina Chico, scored on a penalty stroke. Lehigh had 8 penalty corners in the first half, but failed to capitalize, and the Mountain Hawks trailed at the half, 1-0.
Lehigh began the second period with a renewed fervor, and it showed as senior forward Michelle Wildgen (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) notched her first goal of the season with a helper from senior Jane Knowles (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) to tie the score at 1-1.
In the extra session, Monmouth junior Kellie Nurko found senior Kristen Haberthur who put the ball past Lehigh goalkeeper Margo Smith for the game-winner, just 1:34 into the overtime.
"Monmouth hustled in the overtime, and they capitalized on a quick transition," said Lehigh coach Michelle Finegan following the tough loss. "We played so hard tonight, and this is a heartbreaking outcome." Tuesday night’s loss marked the third consecutive 2-1 defeat for the Mountain Hawks this season.
Lehigh will look to get on the right track when it returns to action on Friday afternoon, when the Mountain Hawks host Cornell at 4:00 p.m. at Ronald J. Ulrich Field.
