BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After picking up its first win of the season on Saturday, the Lehigh field hockey team hopes to continue its winning ways when the Mountain Hawks travel to Saint Francis (Pa.) Wednesday afternoon. Led by reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week Kim Eng, and league honorable mention recipient Lindsey Smith, the Mountain Hawks will look to build on the momentum of Saturday’s 3-2 win over Georgetown against a Red Flash team that remains in search of its first win this season.
On Saturday, the Brown and White had to play from behind after the Hoyas went in front on a penalty stroke early in the game. However, in the 20th minute Smith deflected freshman Eng’s shot off a corner into the cage to tie the game at 1-1.
Midway through the second half, Eng scored her first goal of the game, assisted by Smith and junior Claire Horn. Just a few short minutes later, Eng added her second goal of the game, and fourth of the season, to put the Brown and White up 3-1.
Late in the second half, the Hoyas scored to narrow Lehigh’s lead to 3-2, but the Mountain Hawk defense stood strong. Junior goalkeeper Jess Miller needed to make only two saves in the victory and she received plenty of defensive help from the likes of Horn and juniors Cassie Willard and Taryn Hartzell in the backfield.
Saint Francis enters Wednesday’s contest at 0-5 after falling 3-1 to Radford on Sunday. Sophomore Julie Moore scored for the Red Flash, while goalkeeper Sara Dittmann made 13 saves in a losing effort.
The Red Flash have also dropped games to West Chester, Temple, UC Davis and La Salle.
Wednesday’s game marks the third meeting between the Mountain Hawks and Red Flash. Lehigh has defeated Saint Francis in each of the last two seasons, including a 3-0 victory last year in Bethlehem. Lindsey Smith and sophomores Caitlin Donnelly and Madison Ingal scored goals for the Brown and White.
Game time on Wednesday is set for 4 p.m. from DeGol Field in Loretto, Pa.
