Final tryout looms this weekend for Cassese

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Mountain Hawks head coach Kevin Cassese will take part in the third and final tryout this weekend as he continues his quest for a spot on the 2010 United States National Men’s Lacrosse Team. Cassese will head to Stony Brook University on October 30 as he and 39 other players who qualified for the national training team, finish what has been a grueling process. Cassese traveled to the United States Military Academy in late September and to the United States Naval Academy in mid-October as he attempts to make the national team for the third time in his storied playing career.
Cassese will arrive at Stony Brook in the early afternoon on Friday and quickly move into the team’s practice beginning at 2:00. Following a two-and-a-half-hour practice the tryout participants will hold a clinic and then it’s off to dinner. On Saturday morning Cassese will eat breakfast and then leave the hotel for Stony Brook University. At 1:00 there will be a Blue vs. White scrimmage and the entire weekend comes to a close at 3:30 on Halloween afternoon.
Cassese began this journey in June when he competed at the first portion of the national team tryouts. Of the 84 invitees at the tryouts in June, Cassese was of one 200 players that submitted applications to be considered for Team USA. He was one of 12 tryout selections among the 84 that was a member of the 2006 U.S. team that finished as runner-up to Canada at the World Championships. Cassese was also a member of the 2002 U.S. team that won the world title in Australia.
The 2010 world championship will be the first men’s championship conducted by the newly formed FIL, which is a result of the merger of the International Federation of Women’s Lacrosse Associations and the International Lacrosse Federation.
