Mountain Hawks play Princeton to 0-0 draw

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the first time in 13 tries Lehigh earned a positive result versus Princeton as the Mountain Hawks and Tigers battled to a scoreless draw Wednesday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Lehigh out-shot Princeton 14-10 but the defenses dominated on the evening, as after 110 minutes of scoreless soccer the teams had to settle for a tie. The Mountain Hawks move to 7-3-4 on the season, while Princeton is now 5-6-2.
“We were disappointed with our result on Sunday,” said Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin. “Going into tonight’s game we talked about getting our rhythm back. We came out tonight and proved that we can play with anyone on our schedule.”
Lehigh enjoyed a strong start to the match, firing the first seven shots of the night in the first half. The Mountain Hawks finished with an 8-4 advantage in shots through the first 45 minutes.
The teams battled through 45 more minutes without a goal as Lehigh out-shot Princeton 5-3 in the second half. In overtime both team’s had limited chances to dent the score sheet. Each team had one shot in the first overtime period with sophomore Genna Pepe’s shot stopped by Alyssa Pont and Jen Hoy’s attempt for the Tigers saved by junior Lauren Mains. Princeton owned the only two shots of the second overtime period, but Lauren Watley’s attempt was blocked and another shot from Hoy sailed wide.
Whatley fired a game-high four shots for Princeton, while Hoy added three for the Tigers. Senior Natalie Hojnacki led Lehigh with three shots while Glynn Fitzer, Hailey Coonrad, Genna Pepe and Lauren Glazebrook fired two apiece.
Mains finished with two saves for Lehigh while Pont made five saves for Princeton. Prior to tonight’s game the Tigers had won all 12 previous meetings versus Lehigh in women’s soccer.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Holy Cross for their final road contest of the season. Game time is set for 3 p.m. from Worcester.
