BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Junior Liz Carlos scored her first goal of the season to lead Lehigh to its second straight win, as the Mountain Hawks blanked Fairleigh Dickinson 1-0 Friday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Carlos’ 55th minute strike was all the offense Lehigh would need as the Mountain Hawks defense pitched its second straight shutout and fourth clean sheet overall this season. The Mountain Hawks even their record at 4-4-1 with the victory.
The first 45 minutes featured no scoring, with Lehigh out shooting Fairleigh Dickinson by an 8-2 margin. The Mountain Hawks did enjoy several quality chances, as freshman Jana Basubas hit the crossbar early on and freshman Ali MacLeod was denied by Knights keeper Rachel Derrico in the 17th minute.
Carlos, Lehigh’s leading scorer in 2007, delivered the game’s lone goal on a shot from the middle of the 18-yard box after a textbook through ball from sophomore Glynn Fitzer, who picked up an assist on the play.
The Lehigh defense took care of the rest, stopping several second half chances from the Knights, who fell to 2-6 with the loss.
“You have to give FDU some credit,” said Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin. “Even though we controlled most of the play in the first half, and scored a goal early in the second half, they continued to put pressure on us. We can’t give them that many opportunities to tie the game.”
Sophomore Lauren Mains turned aside a pair of shots in the second half to earn her fourth shutout of the season. The Mountain Hawks out shot Fairleigh Dickinson 14-6 and had all seven corner kicks on the evening.
“Overall we played well,” added Oudin. “Playing a zero-zero game or being up one goal is too tight of a margin, but it was a good win for us at home, and a positive result as we continue to prepare for Patriot League play.”
The Mountain Hawks will be back on the pitch on Sunday when they host Mount St. Mary’s. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. from the Ulrich Sports Complex and the match can be seen online at Lehighsports.com with streaming powered by Yahoo! Sports College Broadcast.
