Cassese set to welcome newest Mountain Hawks

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Smith Family Head Lacrosse Coach Kevin Cassese has announced the addition of 12 student-athletes to the Mountain Hawks program for the 2009 season that will arrive on campus on Thursday, August 21.  These newest members of the lacrosse program hail from nine different states and cover every positional group.  "I am proud to welcome these twelve outstanding student-athletes into our Mountain Hawk men's lacrosse family,” Cassese explained.  “This group of future Lehigh graduates of the year 2012 will bring very unique qualities to the table as lacrosse players, as students, and as young men."

 

Cassese continued, “In order to achieve the lofty goals we have set for ourselves in the 2008-09 campaign and beyond, it is important to keep the tradition of bringing quality people into this program.  I am excited about the quality and strength of character of this group, and am very much looking forward to working with them as freshmen on the 2008-09 squad."

 

Coming to Lehigh from Nashua, New Hampshire is defenseman Kyle Bedell.  A three time All-State selection, Bedell helped lead Bishop Guertin High School to the 2005 and 2008 state championship as well as the 2007 and 2008 state championships in ice hockey.  Bedell was a First-Team All-State selection in 2008 when he also garnered All-Star honors from the Union Leader and the Nashua Telegraph.  He also was a member of the National Senior Showcase Tournament championship team.  Off the field, Bedell was a two year member of the Honor Roll.

 

Projected to play on the attack for the Mountain Hawks is Kevin Donovan, Jr., from Bethany, Connecticut.  Donovan was a two time All-State selection for lacrosse and hockey at Amity High Regional High School.  He was also a two time captain and team MVP in both sports, while receiving Dean’s List Honors for each of his four years at Amity.  Donovan went on to take a Post Graduate year at Choate Rosemary Hall in Connecticut where he was a starting attackman on the field and an Honor Roll member in the classroom. 

 

Arriving by way of Atlantic Beach, Florida is defenseman Gaige Flint.  A member of the National Honor Society and the Honor Roll, Flint was a two time All-District selection at Episcopal High School as well as the Defensive Player of the Year.  A team captain, Flint garnered team MVP honors and he won the President’s Education Award.  Flint also participated in football where he was a member of the All-County Academic Team.

 

Dana Frye comes to Bethlehem from Annapolis, Maryland where he graduated from St. Mary’s High School.  Frye is projected to play at the attack and in the midfield.  Frye was a four year member of the varsity lacrosse team at St. Mary’s where he helped lead them to a pair of playoff appearances.  Off the field, Frye was a member of the National Honor Society, a Parvis Scholar and he graduated within the top 15-percent of his class.  In addition, he was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

 

Matt Fullam is a graduate of Randolph High School in Randolph, New Jersey, which he led to a pair of runner-up finishes in Group III in 2006 and 2007.  Fullam was an All-Conference and All-Division selection and also excelled in hockey where he led Randolph to back-to-back state championships.  In the classroom, Fullam was named the Morris County Scholar Athlete Award winner as well as a USAA National Business Merit Award recipient.  He was also a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society.   

 

Blaise Fullen is a midfielder from Oreland, Pennsylvania where he led William Penn Charter High School to the semifinals of the state playoffs in 2008.  Fullen garnered All-League accolades as a senior, and on the football field he was a two time All-League selection and an All-City honoree as a senior.  Off the field, Fullen was a member of the Honor Roll every semester of high school.

 

From Cohasset, Massachusetts comes Michael Grimm, a midfielder/attackman.  Grimm graduated from Cohasset High School where he helped lead the lacrosse team to a pair of Division III state championships as well as a pair of state finals appearances.  Grimm served as captain during the 2008 season and was named a South Shore League All-Star in 2007 and 2008, as well a top 40 all-star by the EMASS coaches in 2008.  A four year letterwinner, Grimm garnered All-Scholastic accolades from the Mariner in 2007 and was also a standout on the soccer field where he was a two time captain and All-League performer in 2007.  In the classroom, Grimm was an honor roll student.

 

The next member of Lehigh’s newest class is Raymond, Maine native Cameron Lao-Gosney.  Cameron graduated from Hebron Academy, in Maine, and then took a Post Graduate year at Avon Old Farms, in Connecticut.  An Academic All-American, Cameron was named to the All-Northern New England team while at Hebron and the All-Western New England team while at Avon, while helping to lead his Hebron team to the MAISAD Championship.  He also helped lead the hockey and soccer programs to league championships.

 

Roman Lao Gosney, Cameron’s brother, is a midfielder from Raymond, Maine.  Roman also attended Hebron and then Avon Old Farms.  Roman was an All-Northern New England team selection while at Hebron Academy and an All-Western New England team honoree while at Avon Old Farms.  He helped lead his team at Hebron the MAISAD State Championship.  Off the field, Roman was a member of the Honor Roll every year during secondary school career.

 

From St. Paul’s School in Brooklandville, Maryland is attackman Adam Johnston.  As a senior, the Street, Maryland native led his team in scoring and compiled 87 goals during his final two seasons in high school, picking up 200 ground balls in that time.  Johnston was named to the MSLCA Senior All-Star Team and was a two time All-Towson Times and All-Baltimore Examiner selection, as well as an All-MIAA Digital Sports Team Member.  Johnston also participated in soccer and basketball, serving as captain of both teams.  Off the field he was a member of the Honor Roll and the Headmaster List and was the recipient of the French Prize.  He was also a member of the peer leadership program and served as vice-president of the Honor Council.

 

Conor Murphy is a standout goalie from Wellesley High School in Massachusetts where he was an Honor Roll student and helped lead Wellesley to the 2006 Massachusetts Division II state championship. He followed up his career at Wellesley with a Post Graduate year at Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts where he was named a New England Prep All-Star and led his team to the 2008 New England West I League championship.

 

Rounding out Lehigh’s class of 2012 is Trevor Stapleton from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.  Stapleton graduated from Birmingham Seaholm High School where he was a First-Team All-State selection, a Michigan Division I All-Star and an All-Midwest honorable mention honoree.  Stapleton also participated in football in high school and served as captain for two years. In the classroom, Stapleton was a member of the High Honor Roll and the Principal’s List and he graduated with High Honors.

 

In addition to these 12 new members, Lehigh returns seven of its top eight scorers for the 2009 season, as well as 20 letterwinners.  The fall lacrosse season opens up for the Mountain Hawks with the first official practice on Monday, September 8th, and will culminate with a Fall Tournament on Saturday, October 11th.  Please visit Lehighsports.com for more details regarding fall practices and events and for general information regarding the Mountain Hawk Lacrosse Program.
