Senior captain Greg Furst scored the game’s first goal at the 11:28 mark of the opening quarter. The goal was of the man-down variety and was unassisted. Junior Matt Diehl then took a feed from classmate Ricky Cornetta and found the back of the net to put Lehigh in front 2-0, which is how the score remained after one quarter of play.
Brandon Corp netted the Raiders first goal of the day with 8:59 left on the second quarter clock and it appeared as though that is how the teams would enter halftime, but Cornetta scored with only one tick left on the first half clock and Lehigh took a 3-1 lead into intermission.
Matt Lalli opened the second half scoring for Colgate with a goal at the 11:12 mark of the third; it was the only goal of the entire 15 minutes and sent the teams into the final quarter with Lehigh on top 3-2.
Corp netted his second score of the afternoon with just 5:21 to go in the contest and Lalli then gave the Raiders their first lead of the game with his second score. Corp tacked on his third goal of the game with 1:42 to go. The last five meetings between these league foes have been decided by a total of just eight goals.
Lehigh took 24 shots for the game to Colgate’s 31, with Cornetta leading the way with eight. Senior Stuart Baxter was the team leader in ground balls with seven, while seniors Tom Allen and Dan Honeywell both scooped up three apiece. Senior Eric Spirko made 11 saves in net for the Mountain Hawks and as a team Lehigh was 12-of-19 on clear attempts.
Colgate scooped up 34 ground balls, led by E.J. Atamian who registered a game-high seven, while Will Planer totaled six. Corp led the Raiders with ten shots, with Lalli unleashing nine. In goal for the home team, Tim Harrington sent back 11 shots in 60 minutes of action.
Lehigh will be back in action on Friday, April 11 when the Mountain Hawks host nationally ranked Bucknell at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Game time is set for 7:30 and all of the action will be shown live on Lehighsports.com.
