Lehigh drops back and forth game to Penn St.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Lehigh opened up its three-game series against Penn State with an 18-9 loss on Friday at Lubrano Park.  The Mountain Hawks scored the games first six runs, but the Nittany Lions rolled off 18 straight runs run from the fourth to seventh innings to secure the win.  Billy Swenson had a pair of hits and 3 RBI for the Brown and White, who fall to 10-10 on the season, while Penn State improves to 4-10.

 

Lehigh picked up the first run of the game in the top of the second on a RBI double down the right field line from Swenson.  The Mountain Hawks offense then exploded for five runs in the next inning.  Brendan McGaheran started the scoring on a one-run double to left field, plating Joe Ercolano from first.

 

Geoff Campbell knocked in the next two runs on single to right field.  Swenson picked up his second and third RBI on a single to leftfield, scoring Campbell and Austin Borden.  Four of the five Lehigh runs in the inning came with two outs.

 

Penn State responded with three runs in the bottom of the third and three more in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 6-6.  Lehigh took the lead back in the fifth on a single to right field by Logan Marshall. 

 

The Nittany Lions answered back with five runs in the bottom half of the inning, then seven more in the bottom of the seventh.

 

Joe Matteo (3-1) earned the loss in the start, pitching 4.1 innings, giving up seven earned runs on eight hits.

 

The Mountain Hawks return to the diamond tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. when they play the second game of their series against Penn State.
