Mountain Hawks upended by Brown on road

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Lehigh suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday afternoon with a 10-4 setback at the hands of the Brown University Bears.  Scoring goals for the Mountain Hawks (1-1) were Jonathan Stumpf, Ricky Cornetta, Matt Diehl and Stuart Baxter.  Brown received two goals apiece from Thomas Muldoon and Andrew Feinberg as the Bears improve to 1-0 with a victory in their season opener. 

 

Lehigh out shot the Bears 38-27 on the afternoon led by Max Dahlem’s four, while Baxter scooped up a team-best four of the Mountain Hawks 28 ground balls.  Lehigh was just eight-of-18 in face-offs and 16-of-20 in clears, while Brown was successful in 22 of its 30 clear attempts.  Baxter had a solid day in the X for the Mountain Hawks, winning eight-of-12 face offs, while Richard Bradley, Dan Honeywell and Eric Spirko all scooped up three ground balls.

 

Nic Bell registered a game-high six ground balls for Brown and he also won seven-of-15 face offs.  Muldoon unleashed seven shots for the game and dished out a game-high three assists to give him five points on the day.

 

Spirko played all 60 minutes in goal for the Brown and White, sending back three shots in that time and for Brown Jordan Burke played the first 58 minutes and stopped 13 Lehigh shots before giving way to Matt Criss for the final two minutes.

 

The Mountain Hawks got on the board first when Diehl netted an unassisted goal at the 12:49 mark of the opening quarter.  Brown ripped off the game’s next four scores however to take a 4-1 lead with 10:05 remaining in the first half.  Cornetta sliced Brown’s lead in half however, as he found the back of the net off of a feed from Dahlem at the 1:14 mark of the second quarter.  A late first half goal by Peter Fallon gave the Bears a 5-2 lead however as the teams retired for halftime.

 

Baxter opened the third quarter with his first goal of the season at the 14:52 mark and the Mountain Hawks were down just two, at 5-3.  Brown answered with three straight goals though to go in front 8-3 with 11:57 left in the game.  Stumpf scored his first collegiate goal with 10:37 left to play, but a pair of Bear goals, one from Muldoon and another by Jeffrey Foote sealed the victory for the home team.

 

Lehigh will be back in action on Tuesday when the Mountain Hawks travel to Philadelphia to take on the Drexel Dragons.  The opening face-off is set for 4:00.
