BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Smith Family Head Lacrosse Coach Kevin Cassese has announced the Mountain Hawks captains for the upcoming season.  Seniors Dan Honeywell, Shane Donlan, Max Dahlem and Brendan Feeney will serve as captains this year after being elected by their teammates.  New this year, the captains of the Lehigh men’s lacrosse program will be known as the Chris Wakely 44 Club Captains.  “All team members who are elected as captains should possess the traits of the members of the 44 Club, which was established by former head coach Chris Wakely,” Cassese explained.  “I also believe that Chris Wakely possesses these traits, and that it is an honor for our captains to be associated with his name and beliefs.”

Cassese continued, “Our team made outstanding choices in selecting these four young men to lead us for the coming season.  It is an honor to be chosen by your teammates to serve as captain and I’ve very confident that Dan, Shane, Max and Brendan will do an outstanding job in this role.”

The “44 Club” was established by Chris Wakely during his time as the head men’s lacrosse coach at Lehigh.  The number 44 was awarded to the student-athlete that best exemplified everything a Lehigh lacrosse athlete should represent.  The individual that wore number 44 best met the standards of student-athletes at Lehigh: hard-working, self-disciplined, selfless and relentless in the pursuit of human achievement.  The inaugural member of the 44 Club was Mike Rabinovitz.  Other members include Scott Carpenter, Jim Baran, Jimmy Gabal, Tom Weiss and Kevin Donlan.  For the 2008 season, Wakely was honored by Cassese and the entire program as the 44 Club recipient.

This year’s quartet of captains, Honeywell, Donlan, Dahlem and Feeney has combined to appear in nearly 100 games throughout their careers.

Honeywell earned First-Team All-Patriot League accolades a season ago after leading the Mountain Hawks in caused turnovers and finishing second on the squad in ground balls.  Honeywell also scored one goal, which came versus national power Duke.  Honeywell has started 36 games during his time in the Brown and White, and scooped up 71 ground balls entering this season.  He was also a member of the 2008 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

Donlan saw time in all 15 games for Lehigh in 2008, and scored his first collegiate goal in a 9-7 victory over archrival Lafayette.  He also started a pair of games, versus league foes Colgate and Bucknell.  Donlan has increased his playing time and production every year he’s been in Bethlehem, with his games played and ground ball totals improving in each season.

Dahlem, who started all 15 games as a junior, was one of Lehigh’s leaders on offense a season ago, scoring 16 goals and 22 points, both second best on the team.  The finance major netted a hat trick at Drexel and again vs. Villanova, while scoring at least two goals in four games.  He scored a team-leading three game-winning goals, and also added 23 ground balls.  In the game vs. Villanova, Dahlem scored three goals, including the game-winner, recorded a pair of ground balls and unleashed five shots.

Feeney, who carries a 3.74 grade point average in the classroom, is a multi-year member of the Dean’s List.  He appeared in four games a season ago and figures to play a key role for the Mountain Hawks defense this coming season.

The Mountain Hawks, who recently completed their fall season, return 19 letterwinners from last year.
