BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh’s Arthur “Robby” Walsh has been honored as the male recipient of the second Patriot League Sportsmanship Award.  The Army women’s basketball team and Lafayette women’s soccer student-athlete Ashley Yelland were the female award winners.  The Patriot League Sportsmanship Award is open to all student-athletes at a Patriot League school, regardless of sport, with one male and one female winner selected.  The winners of the Patriot League Sportsmanship Award are then forwarded on to the NCAA to be considered for the national honor.  Each of the eight Patriot League institutions is eligible to nominate candidates which are then voted on by the Patriot League Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Walsh, who recently graduated from Lehigh with a degree in political science, appeared in nine games for the Mountain Hawks during the 2007 season, making two starts along the way.  The Maryland native scooped up five ground balls and caused three turnovers on the year.  Walsh was nominated because he exemplified what sportsman-like behavior should be both on and off of the playing field.  He often served as the team’s “voice of reason” reminding his teammates to not be instigated by what others, including opponents and/or fans, might do or say.  It is behavior like this that contributed to the Lehigh men’s lacrosse program earning the 2006 James “Ace” Adams Sportsmanship Award following the 2006 season.

Off of the field, Walsh has participated in Lehigh’s award winning C.O.A.C.H. program, lending his time to the annual Adopt-a-Family event, in which each sport program adopts an underprivileged family and raises resources to provide gifts for them during the holiday season.  He was also the 2007 recipient of the Lehigh University Athletics Department Sportsmanship Award.

“It’s difficult to have as strong an impact on a team or a program that Robby has had without being what your opponents may regard as your go-to guy, but anyone that has been associated with the Lehigh lacrosse program during his time knows the extent of Robby’s true impact,” head coach Chris Wakely commented.

This marks the second consecutive year that a Lehigh student-athlete was honored with the Patriot League Sportsmanship Award.  Former men’s basketball standout Joe Knight ’06 earned the award last year.
