“Today we certainly came out and really played to our potential,” said Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan. “Earlier this year we faced a lot of excellent pitching, and all that experience helped us as we swung the bats well out there today.”
The 17-1 victory in game one was significant for several reasons. Lehigh became the first team to win 200 Patriot League regular season games. The 17 runs scored were the most since Lehigh scored 22 in a victory over
The Mountain Hawks wasted little time in game one, scoring all 17 runs in the first three innings. Already up 1-0, Schenbeck and sophomore Lisa Sweeney each delivered two-run singles to put Lehigh up 5-0 after one.
In the second inning, Lehigh scored seven runs on six hits, and capitalized on two
Lehigh continued its onslaught in the third as sophomore Ali Torborg smacked a two-run triple to centerfield. Torborg later scored on a solo home run from Sweeney, her second of the season, and the first from a Lehigh player at Kaufman Field this season. After a pitching change, Hanley stepped up and followed Sweeney’s blast with one of her own to close out the scoring.
Sweeney also earned her ninth win of the season in the circle, allowing just one run on two hits in three innings of work. Senior Stefanie Forlenza followed with two scoreless frames of her own.
In game two, Lehigh scored a run in the second inning, three in the third, and then five in the fourth to put the game away.
Junior Kate Marvel drove in the game’s first run on a single up the middle scoring freshman Brooke Lewis. In the next frame senior Lauren Haney smacked her second home run of the season, a two run shot to left field. Another RBI single from Schenbeck made it 4-0 Lehigh.
In the fifth inning, Sterrett delivered a two-run single up the middle, and Schenbeck plated two more with a triple.
Freshman Tiffany Curtis backed up the Lehigh bats, allowing just one hit in five innings of work, while striking out six to even her record at 6-6.
Lehigh and Lafayette will wrap up their four game series with another doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch for game one is set for noon from Kaufman Field.
