BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh extended its Patriot League regular season winning streak to 15 straight games as the Mountain Hawks swept a doubleheader from Holy Cross, winning both games by 8-0 scores in five innings Sunday at Kaufman Field. The Mountain Hawks completed the four game sweep of the Crusaders, and the wins, combined with Colgate’s loss to Lafayette in game one of their doubleheader, move the Brown and White into sole possession of first place in the league standings.

The wins improve Lehigh’s record to 30-15-1 overall, 15-1 in league games. The Mountain Hawks reached the 30-win plateau for the seventh straight season. Holy Cross falls to 4-36, 1-15 in league contests.

In game one the Mountain Hawks scored seven runs in the fourth and fifth innings to break open a close game. Senior Lauren Haney delivered the game’s first run with a single, scoring sophomore Whitney Lowe.

The score remained 1-0 into the fourth inning where Lehigh extended its lead on a one out RBI double from sophomore Lisa Sweeney, and later a two out run-scoring single from junior Kate Marvel.

The Mountain Hawks put game one away with a two-out five-run assault in the fifth inning. Senior Mendy Martin doubled to score classmate Heather Hamasaki. Junior Taryn Hanley followed with a bases loaded two-run single to make it 6-0, and Marvel followed with a triple to left centerfield, scoring the final two runs needed to invoke the eight-run rule.

Sweeney struck out six and walked two in her five innings in the circle, allowing just four hits, as she improves to 17-4 on the season. Sheena Stangler suffered the loss for the Crusaders, and falls to 2-9.

Lehigh used a more methodical approach in game two, scoring runs in four of the five innings. Hamasaki, Haney and senior Julie Sterrett each had two RBI in the game to support freshman Tiffany Curtis, who went the distance on a three-hitter, striking out five and walking one as she improves to 10-7 on the season.

Haney plated Lehigh’s first run with a groundout to shortstop, and Sterrett followed with a single down the left field line. Hamasaki made it 3-0 Lehigh in the second with an RBI single that scored Megan Conrad, who was 1-for-1 with a walk and was also hit by a pitch twice. Conrad scored three of Lehigh’s eight runs in game two.

After going scoreless in the third inning, Lehigh scored three in the fourth on RBI singles from Haney and Sterrett and an RBI groundout from Martin.

Lehigh cemented its second mercy-rule win of the day with an RBI single from Conrad and a walk-off single from Hamasaki in the fifth inning.

The Mountain Hawks will return to the diamond on Tuesday when they travel down the Main Line to face Villanova. First pitch for game one of the non-league doubleheader begins at 3:00 pm from Villanova, Pa.
