Lehigh sweeps Sunday doubleheader from Army

In game one, senior Julie Sterrett kicked off the five-run frame with an RBI single, scoring Heather Hamasaki from second base. Three batters later, senior Mendy Martin plated Sterrett with a bases loaded single. Whitney Schenbeck followed with a two-run double, and came around to score Lehigh’s fifth and final run on a single by junior Kate Marvel.
Sophomore Lisa Sweeney improved to 8-4 on the season, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out seven to earn the complete game victory.
Game two was more of a back-and-forth affair, with Army scoring runs in each of the first two innings, only to see the Mountain Hawks answer with runs of their own.
Marvel played a significant role in creating Lehigh’s first two runs. She led off the first inning with a single, stole a base and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Hamasaki. In the second, Marvel tied the game at two with an RBI single, scoring Schenbeck.
Lehigh took the lead for the first time in the fifth inning as sophomore Taryn Hanley tripled to left field, scoring Sterrett. Freshman Brooke Lewis brought Hanley home with a perfectly executed squeeze bunt.
Army rallied with two runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game, but the Mountain Hawks battled back with two outs in the bottom of the frame. Marvel (3-for-4) and junior Megan Conrad delivered back-to-back one out singles, and moved into scoring position on a groundout. Haney lined the first pitch from Black Knights starter Veronica Barth through the right side to score Marvel and Conrad with the go ahead runs. The two runs batted in gives Haney a team leading 16 this season.
Freshman Tiffany Curtis struck out a career high 10 batters, and allowed three earned runs on five hits to earn her fifth win of the season. The Mountain Hawks pounded out 13 hits in the nightcap, with five players (Marvel, Conrad, Sterrett, Hanley and Schenbeck) smacking multiple hits in the game.
The Mountain Hawks will return to the diamond on Wednesday when they will host Hofstra in a non-league doubleheader between two of the top programs in the northeast. First pitch for game one is set for 3:00 pm from Kaufman Field.
