Lehigh drops 8-2 decision to St. Joseph's

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Mountain Hawks scored two runs in the bottom of the third to make it a tied game, but St. Joseph’s rattled off six runs in six innings to defeat Lehigh 8-2.  Junior Joe Ercolano was the only Mountain Hawk to register multiple hits as he was 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles.  Lehigh has now lost its last three games to fall to 0-4-1 on the season, while St. Joseph’s picked up its first win of the season to improve to 1-10.

The Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead off runs from Chris Cashman and Mike Blahusch in the top of the third.  Lehigh started to come back when junior Liam O’Connor reached base on an error and then stole his first of two bases on the afternoon.  With only one out, Ercolano doubled to bring O’Connor home.  On the next at bat, senior Stephen Salemme hit an RBI single that allowed Ercolano to cross the plate and even the score at two.

However, St. Joseph’s would score one run in each of the fourth, sixth and eight innings and then get three in the ninth to build a large enough cushion and secure the win.

In addition to O’Connor, senior Nick Bet also recorded a stolen base.  Junior Billy Alec picked up his first loss of the season after pitching five innings and allowing three runs.  Randall Mower was awarded the win for St. Joseph’s, while Chris Prescott got the save.

Lehigh returns to the diamond tomorrow night when it faces Sacred Heart in Clearwater, Fla.  Game time is scheduled for 7:45 pm.
