“We dug ourselves a hole in the first half, but really rallied and had a great second half,” explained head coach Liz Ota afterwards. “I was very pleased to see how well we played in the second half because over the course of the season we have had some tough second halves, so that was encouraging. Kelsy (Ferris) was outstanding in goal for us again, particularly down the stretch, she came up with a number of big saves.”
She added, “We had a few opportunities towards the end but just could not convert down towards their goal. I think Bucknell played well though, you can’t take anything away from them, but overall I am very pleased with our effort.”
Lehigh came out strong in the first half, as Carmola and Chamberlain netted the game’s first three scores to take a 3-0 lead at the 17:45 mark. Bucknell cut it to a one-goal game with back-to-back scores, but Carmola netted her third score of the afternoon on a free position shot with 16:07 left in the half, and the Mountain Hawks were back in front by two. Buechel and Kremer netted two straight scores for the visitors to tie the score at four at the 14:31 mark, but MacIntyre and Carmola again gave Lehigh the lead, this time at 6-4 with 9:18 remaining. From there however, Bucknell scored the game’s next five goals to go in front 9-6 with just 1:04 left in the half, which is how the teams would enter halftime.
Chamberlain opened the second half with her 13th goal of the season off of a feed from sophomore Kyle Roth, and Christy Smith took a feed from MacIntryre with 20:44 to go and beat Bucknell keeper Katie Harstock to bring Lehigh to within one at 9-8. The Mountain Hawks then tied the score at nine when MacIntyre scored off of a feed from senior Vienna Pharaon, but Bucknell took the lead right back with three straight scores of its own.
Lehigh refused to go away though and put together an impressive rally in the closing minutes. Carmola scored at the 8:13 mark, Lissy King took a feed from Roth and scored 36 seconds later, and 1:17 after that, Chamberlain tied the game at 12 with her tenth goal of the year. The teams both had chances down the stretch, but Lehigh could not take advantage. The Bison did however, as Alison Heffernan scored with just 1:15 to go and the Bucknell defense held off any hopes for a Lehigh rally.
Lehigh unleashed 30 shots on the afternoon and recorded 31 ground balls, led by King’s six and Ferris’ five. MacIntyre took nine shots for the Brown and White, as did Carmola, while Chamberlain and MacIntyre both won two draw controls. Ferris sent back 16 Bison shots in goal for the Mountain Hawks, while Harstock recorded 11 saves of her own. Alex Radebaugh led Bucknell with five ground balls for the game and Carol Donahue dished out a team-high four assists.
Lehigh returns to action on Monday when the Mountain Hawks take on the Aggies of California-Davis at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Game time is set for 4:00 and all of the action can be seen and heard live at lehighsports.com.
